Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hello All. To say my day was not the best, i have reached a decession to take myself off all my diabetic meds. Its taken it toll on me and when i got it under control I thought there was hope. These past few weeks my morning readings were pretty close to where i fought so hard for a year only to find they are now increasing. I have given all the issues with stopping my insulin a good deal of thought. While I believe this is what I have to do....i don't recommend this for anyone else and they should continue with their treatment. Being disabled and not being active at all does not help as this is always a good part of the control and treatment of diabetes. I did everything right during the treatment but it didn't go well for me.

I want to thank everyone for their support and wish everyone the very best.

@wendy mckay, I urge you to reconsider your decision. Please contact whoever prescribes your diabetes medication in the morning and discuss your feelings with them.

Agree with Copepod, never give up with diabetes, it's win some days and loose some days. Help is out there discuss with your GP or whoever you see about your meds what your feeling feeling are like.

I made a decision to stop Metformin and Atorvastatin last year - I don't know what you are taking, but as I was so ill it made me absolutely determined that I would lower my blood glucose levels no matter what it took.
I tested and cut out all high starch and high sugar foods. If you are struggling to include so called healthy foods in your diet, I can only urge you to reconsider. I have eaten very well and feel great, am losing weight and feel twenty years younger. My numbers are normal, cholesterol is good - things could not be better.
Control is possible without medication - assuming that you are a typical type 2 diabetic with adequate insulin.
Don't give up.

Are there no alternative meds they can try you with.

@wendy mckay have you spoken with someone from your diabetes team / GP surgery today? Please let us know.

@wendy mckay I absolutely agree with @Copepod that you should talk to your clinic or GP about this, how you feel, and what your options are.

Diabetes is rarely well behaved enough to sit still, so your medication may need adjusting, but it would be better to talk to someone to get advice.

Perhaps call the Diabetes UK careline 0345 123 2399 (Mon-Fri 9am-6pm) who can give you some advice and support and maybe help you to have more productive conversations with your Dr/nurse.

Difficult decision to make Wendy...although no doubt some of us here can understand why you might come to that conclusion...worrying you've got to the point where you feel that is the only option you have...particularly without seeking medical advice...disheartening to have worked so hard...then see your levels rise...however...I wonder if there may be an underlying reason why your sugars have risen...was it a sudden rise...or a gradual increase...possibly an infection?...maybe just run down...possible stress/depression...it could be any number of things...or no particular reason at all...that can happen... of course it's your right to stop the medication...but...why not discuss it with your GP...or nurse...it won't do any harm...just talk to them about it...even after that you are still free to choose whether you restart it or not...nothing to lose there...as for activity it does play a part in reducing those BG levels...it was a great help to me when I first started...not doing much of it now...joints playing up too much...I'm just taking extra care with adjusting my diet...it's possible there may be another route for you...like the others I would urge you to speak to your doctor...if you can't face a visit to the practice...why not have a phone consultation...sometimes easier that way...please don't give up.

Hello to everyone. Thank you so much for all your replies and encouragement. I have not spoken to anyone these past 2 weeks. I had bloodwork done yesterday and should get results in a week. I have tried different meds over the past year, but things finally settled down when I was started on Novo Mix 30. I'm not one to ask for help and do try and sort things out myself......but this diabetes has had me all over the place. I am not able to do much of anything in the way of exercise as I have other issues going on which prevents me from doing things that would help me. Diet is good and regular, so i dont know why things are not progressing as they should.

Angry and disappointed in myself for allowing my life style get out of hand.... I need to fix it but don't know how....

You need to speak to someone Wendy...clearly you are well motivated...want to improve your levels...don't be angry or disappointed...it's not your fault...sometimes these things happen with diabetes...please pick up the phone...call your surgery...I am fiercely independent...however...I realise I cannot manage my diabetes completely on my own...so I accept help & support when I need it...there have been days when I really felt like throwing in the towel...it passes...there are people willing to help...that can help...you need to reach out for that...please do.

Good Wendy...so relieved to hear that...to be frank Diabetes can be a real B***h at times...you work hard...many times against the odds...feel hopeful...then suddenly it seems no matter what you do...nothing is working...been at that stage myself...happens to many of us here...I see you're a new member...but...clearly not new to diabetes...wondering if you could tell us a little more about yourself...if you would prefer not to just yet...understandable...but it might help others to offer some advice...of course it's vital that you speak to your health care team as soon as possible...when you're ready it would be helpful to hear what your levels are...how long you've been diagnosed...what made that come about...possibly your levels are not as bad as you fear...we all want those perfect numbers...chase them doggedly...push ourselves too hard... if we knew something of your history we may be able to offer advice/suggestions...I've learnt so much here...whilst diabetes is one condition that we can control mostly ourselves (obviously not the medication side)...I doubt very much I would have got the control I have now without joining the forum...a great source of support for me....keep us updated...ask whatever questions you need to...there's no judgement or disapproval here...good luck...be interested to hear your progress.

Lol that put a smile on my face again thank you so much to everyone who took the time to reach out to me. I was told in 2010 I was pre diabetic and was told to take care of my diet. I lost my mother 4 years ago to cancer and I took care of her to the end. She too was Diabetic type 2 and so is my sister. Two years ago in routine blood work my sugar was sitting at 92.. was on metformin and other med but the side effects were pretty rough. I eventually saw a Diabetic Dr who then tried two different types of injections but again nausea became a huge issue. Numbers were still high so I agreed to go on Novemix 30. I didn't like the idea as I know one can put on weight which I certainly didn't need as obesity runs in my family....My numbers came down to 62 three months ago and am now waiting for the new results in a week. Taking my blood in the mornings ranged from between 7 and 8. Wanted to tighten them up a bit so I increased insulin by one unit at night. From then on my numbers started going up. Yesterday morning it was 10.2. That done it for me. Have and a few lows but that comes with the territory. So that's about it on that side of things. By the way I was advised by the diabetic nurse that I could increase my insulin. I take 48 units am and 38 pm.

Wendy...I've only been diagnosed for 11 months..so a relative newbie...been on Metformin since then...initially took 2 daily...now reduced that to one a day...with GP's agreement...I am so totally ignorant of insulin use...so unable to advise on that...no doubt those experienced with insulin will be along shortly to offer advice ...seems the last few years have been hard...so sorry to hear about your mother...lost mine when I was relatively young...it's so hard...again I'm no expert...your levels at 7 & 8 are a little high but not massively so...the 62 I presume that was your last HbA1c test...and you're waiting for the next...have you been able to get an appointment yet?...wondering why your levels spiked when you increased the insulin...as said insulin is not my forte...others may know the answer to that...keep us updated...good luck.

Yes it was the HbA1c test. So in approx a year or so it came down from 92 to 62. Have been aiming to get it down another 10. The diabetic nurse says it good to be under 10 but want to get them down to about 5.5 or 6 in the morning. I seem to get those numbers late afternoon only...i will let you know the latest HbA1c results. Again appreciate all support.

Wendy, I have the same issue that my morning tests are quite often my highest, then going down in the day. DN said it could be my liver sends out sugar thinking I need it to wake me up, I have started testing if I wake up between 4 and 5 for the bathroom and those tests have been lower than the one taken at 7am when I get up. This D is certainly a tricky thing to deal with, every-time I think I am making progress something happens and the numbers go back up.

I hope you get the support you need for your D team, but we are always will to listen.

Thank you Grannylorraine. It's mind boggling to say the least. I guess I just have to accept these things as they happen and not give up no matter how hard it gets. I just hate failure within myself. Time for me to grow up I guess..lol it's not going to be an easy road...
