Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hello all, I’m me to this, and here. I was diagnosed two weeks ago. Started metformin one 500mg per day for a week, then two for a further week. After two days, I was feeling very nauseous and vomiting (sorry). Nurse said to go back to one 500mg. Today is my second day of slow release metformin, 500mg morning and evening. Bloods on waking for the last week range between 23.6 - 28.3. Peaking at 31.6, lowest recorded 17.6. And my vision is blurred. Thirsty etc. I’m feeling a little panicked.

I'd recommend Calling 111 and potentially a trip in. My money's on that you are actually a Type 1 (but I'm not a Doctor, so what would I know). Metformin doesn't make you vomit!

Thanks mark t, I shall give them a call and see what they say.

High Blood sugar does, & an infection does Good luck Dawn

Ask to be referred to the community diabetes specialist team, the specialist nurse will help you.
I too have had high readings, they did settle however I have an infection and are on steroids so numbers are back up.
Metformin can make you vomit it did me, I had to stop Metformin and change to another drug.
Hope you feel better very soon.
Phone 111 if your worried
Type 2's can have high figures and feel thirsty etc.
To be sure of what type you are you would need to have a GAD antibody test, ask your GP.
Take care

Aside from the Metformin what other advice were you given regarding your diet? Many T2 on this forum eat reduced carbs to help control their diabetes. This means very limited potatoes, rice, pasta & bread but plenty of protein and good fats are okay. If you want to know what I mean by limited I would only have 1 roast potato or 1 table spoon of rice or pasta and a slice of Tesco high protein bread as only 10g of carbs per slice.

I was high when diagnosed and it took me a few weeks to get into single figures but I did go for it which isn't always recommended and my eyesight was affected for about 3 weeks - I developed perfect distance vision but was blind as a bat for reading. I'm now back to normal slightly short sighted but reading vision okay for a 54 year old!!!

I am a typical and quite lucky type two - I stopped eating the high carb foods I had been instructed to have and my blood glucose and Hba1c were back to normal in 6 months.
Your blood glucose is so high that unless you have had the same advice I got about eating bread, porridge fruit beans etc. I would be very doubtful about you being a type two.
Can you speak to anyone as an emergency?

If you don't get on with Metformin NICE have bought out some guidelines saying that patients who don't get on with it should be moved onto another tablet. I've struggled with it for 8 years, its no fun :-(
