Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
I was diagnosed aged 8 as type 1, I've not been what anyone would describe as a model diabetic and went through my teens with a rebellious attitude, which as I've gotten older has lessened to the extent of only having minor rebellions with food.

All in all, apart from a scary bought of pneumonia which had me hospitalised and a rather eventful pregnancy, diabetes and I rub along with very few arguments - yes I've had some spectacular hypos in some unfortunate places and situations, which I'll happily share if anyone is interested. However, my most worrying concerns right now are my multiple trigger fingers which are diabetic related and my eyes which I have checked and until last year were fine but now are showing changes. I'd love to hear from anyone who is experiencing similar issue with eyes or fingers ... Thank you 🙂

Hi Kitty W. I have been for 40 odd years & know how you feel ! Was once in hosp & went through 50 test strips in just over 2 days. 😱. You want a pat on the back for being T1 for a long time & i am looking forward to getting my 50 yrs medal from Duk (2yrs) Welcome to forum 🙂

Welcome to the forum 🙂

Hi Kitty welcome to the forum. I've been diabetic since I was 2 - nearly 44 years. I have had problems, not trigger finger but I have background retinopathy (which has stayed background), glaucoma in both eyes and a retinal vein occlusion my left eye which has caused macula oedema. I also have severe gastroparesis and CFS and recently had problems with erratic low BGs which I sorted out by going gluten free. I'm a bit down at the moment because I'm trying to sort out something else but Once that is sorted out I know that I will go back to loving life. I've been an academic, met famous people (after gate crashing a party), been to countries such as Israel and the Lebanon and lots of other things. I'm now a lady of leisure/student/volunteer/mummy to my gorgeous SUsie collie dog. Complications are scary but in my experience I've learnt to get used to them and have been fortunate to have my pump which has tightened up control. I do have bad days but the good days more than make up for them so please ask if you have any questions

Hi Kitty

I have been T1 for nearly 55 years - I didn't know we got a medal though! I have had retinopathy problems but these were sorted out with laser treatment. I have currently got the trigger finger problem but don't know what the answer to this is. I just put up with it but it is very annoying. I have had other complications but am OK at the moment and starting to feel much better - and losing weight since getting a pump in November. I still work full time and am expecting to for quite a while yet. Life with T1 is not all complications and hassle!

Oh, and welcome. 🙂

Hi, thanks for your reply! I've now had 6 lots of surgery on my hands to correct the trigger fingers and they now think I've got rheumatoid arthritis as my hands don't work as well as they should. I'm not letting it get me too down but it means I can't play cricket which I love :(
The ops to correct the fingers is worth it, my left hand is completely pain free now! Good luck with yours 🙂

Thank you and I didn't realise we got a medal!!!
I know what you mean about the 50 test strips - I had pneumonia once and my poor hubby was testing me every 2 minutes as I was so high the machine wouldn't read the results!!!! Luckily the hospital came to our rescue and I'm still here to tell the tale 🙂
