Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi, I'm a male Type 1 diabetic and my partner and I are thinking about trying for a baby. I have good control (consistent sub 6.5% HBa1c (48mmol). She doesn't have diabetes.

Any info on male diabetic responsibilities or factors to be aware of would be much appreciated / helpful?

Hope it goes well for you both!

I think there is a slight increase in risk of children being born to a T1 parent going on to develop the condition, so I’ve always had that in mind with my two - but neither have ever shown any sign of diabetes symptoms so far and are now both in their 20s

I made sure my wife had another person in attendance as well as me at the births, just in case the weirdness of the situation and/or any rushing about caused an unexpected drop in my BGs. though to be fair, my diabetes was much less predictable at the time and I wasn’t so good at reducing hypo risk.

Actually reducing any incidence of hypoglycaemia would be my main recommendation to you as a new Dad with diabetes. Your partner will have more than enough to deal with looking after the little one(s) - especially as they start getting mobile - without having to worry about whether you are going doolalley in the chilled aisle at Asda!

Thanks for the response. Much appreciated!

Haha, I'm sure we'll both have more than enough on our plates looking after the young ones together!

Good luck with it all!

It’s exhausting at times, but such an adventure, and I’m so glad for everything parenting has brought me. Well nearly everything. I could have done without some of those nappies!
