Hi everyone, recently i’ve been getting really thirsty, waking up to pee during the night, dizziness, my breathing and pulse has been really fast, i’m really tired all the time and really bad abdominal pain. i’ve checked my bloods and they were 7.3 and i haven’t ate all day. i don’t know if this is abnormal or not, i’m a little overweight as well, type 1 diabetes heavily runs in my family as well but unfortunately the closest person to me has passed, so i couldn’t get an opinion from them about what they think. obviously with the coronavirus it’s more difficult to go into the doctors surgery to get tested - is there any advice for this regarding if this is normal or not?

Hi and welcome.

Sorry to hear that you are struggling with those symptoms which certainly fit with diabetes but could be related to other illnesses. How confident are you of that 7.3 reading? Is it a new or old meter? Was it a test strip from a newly opened pot or was it something lying around, perhaps from the previously deceased relative.... just trying to asses how accurate that reading is. I would certainly not expect those symptoms with a reading that low. The body generally starts removing glucose via the kidneys (ie increased weeing and thirst) when it gets above 10 but usually the top end of the teens and I would not expect abdominal pain below 20... if you get to 30 or above it is time to head off to hospital, so that 7.3 is not a high reading by any means.
Are you sure that the test strip you used.... if left over from previous relative.... is a blood glucose test strip and not a blood ketone test strip...the latter usually come in individual foil strips rather than pots of 50. If you had ketones of 7.3 then that would tie in with the other symptoms, so you need to be sure of which strips you are using and therefore what you are testing.

I think that even if that is a BG reading of 7.3 which is not necessarily a diabetic reading, you need to seek medical assistance for the symptoms you are suffering, so perhaps contact your GP via telephone or many GP practices have an online service where you fill out a form with your details and symptoms and they contact you back with advice.... which may involve a blood test..... most of the surgeries are set up to take these tests in a safe environment if they are deemed necessary.

Hi @ggeorgiaa Sorry you’ve been feeling ill. To me, the bad abdominal pain alone warrants a call to your GP.

Re your blood test, I wouldn’t necessarily worry about diabetes. I test my non-diabetic friends’ blood sugars sometimes and they’ve often had results in the 7s. The diagnosis used to be after two random tests of 11.1 so you can see you’re a long way from that. I have Type 1 and my blood sugar was in the late 20s when I was diagnosed.

Most importantly - you’re not feeling well for whatever reason so give the doctor a call.

Just to add that you can initially talk to the GP on the phone for advice, and, if you need to be seen, they’ll have systems set up with PPE to keep you (and them) safe.

Hello, to be honest i’m not sure if it was keytones or anything. i just seen it and with the symptoms i decided to use it. i will definitely be in contact with my doctor, even if it doesn’t turn out to be diabetes it’s still quite concerning for me, as they’re the same symptoms as many people in my family had when they got diagnosed. i haven’t tested again since i’ve ate, but again i’m not sure if this was a keytone reading or glucose. thanks again

Thanks a lot for this, the reason i’m so alarmed is this started around 6 days ago, and regarding the test, i’m not sure if it was that now, as it may have been keytones. thanks a lot and i will be sure to visit my gp asap

Are you getting the test strips out of a pot or are they individually in foil strips?

Where did you get the meter and test strips from

Don’t worry about the test strip and what is was for. Regardless of that, you’re not feeling well so that’s the important thing. Don’t be worried about ‘bothering’ your GP. They’re still there for us when needed.

I’d also say to keep an open mind. Lots of conditions can cause symptoms like yours and something running in the family doesn’t mean you’ll necessary get it. Make sure you write a list of symptoms before you phone the GP as it’s easy to forget or get ruffled when you’re speaking to them. The symptoms of Type 1 diabetes are an extreme thirst, peeing a lot, sudden weight loss and tiredness. Abdominal pain could be anything from a urinary nfection, stress, constipation, etc etc.

Do let us know how you are and how you get on with the GP 🙂

@Inka I appreciate what you are saying but if we are able to establish that was a ketone test strip then the OP would be best heading straight to hospital rather than trying to speak to a doctor, particularly as the time is now getting late for GP appointments for the day.

True @nebrascora I didn’t intend to criticise your advice, only to ensure the OP got some medical input ASAP 🙂

@Inka I appreciate that you were not being critical and I totally agree that medical help is important for the OP with those symptoms regardless of BG reading. I just think we might be in a position to suggest a fast track approach if we can establish what type of test strips the OP used. If it was ketones then a 7.3 reading would be a "Go straight to hospital! Do not pass go or even GP surgery!" It would be a red flag situation in my opinion.
