Hi, I’m a 20 year old dancer that was always extremely active and well. I had glandular fever early 2020 but made a full recovery. Since July 2021 I have been getting a number of debilitating symptoms that have led to me having to stop dancing. These include : extreme and sudden hunger with the inability to feel full, extreme first, extreme fatigue which makes me crash, extreme muscle pain/fatigue/weakness, constant yeast infections (which I have been getting since late 2019 and treatments never keeps it away), dizziness, blurry vision, lightheaded, irritability, stomach problems, racing heart, increased anxiety and depression as a result. These are most of the symptoms. Doctors keep saying I have chronic fatigue but this doesn’t seem to make sense to me. When I’ve had diabetes tests I’ve been fine but recently I had a full meal and then an hour later a blood test which said my blood sugar was on the lower side (which me and my doctor thought was odd considering I’d recently eaten and had sugary food) , and recently I had a fasting blood test and my blood sugar was on the higher side (which confused me as I hadn’t eaten and had exercised the evening before with no sugary foods. I was on the first day of my period if that makes a difference?). I really hope that I do not have type 1 diabetes but nothing seems to be making sense and I was wondering if anybody had experienced similar and had any answers? Thank you for your time Xx

The blood test you would need to get a diagnosis would be an HbA1C test which is the average over the previous 3 months so it is irrelevant whether it is fasting or not. I does not sound as if that was the test you have had done so you should ask for that.
However some of the symptoms are consistent with diabetes but some not but you should go back to your doctor for further investigation as there is clearly something going on.

Hi @shau15 Have you had an HbA1C test (a blood test which indicates your average blood sugar over the past 3 months)? Have you had things like anaemia, thyroid, etc ruled out?

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is a real thing. It often occurs after a viral infection or a gastric upset. A close family member had it and it’s very much not all in the head.

For the yeast infections, have you had the type of yeast analysed? Apparently the more unusual ones are more common now. In addition, some are resistant to the usual treatments. Gut upsets can affect intestinal flora as can mineral and vitamin deficiencies, so worth looking at.

Some people are just more prone to yeast infections sadly. A colleague said certain foods brought hers on, especially if she was run down. They are miserable things to have though so do persist in getting help.

Hi, thanks for your reply ! I had this test recent and all they said was slightly raised blood sugar. I was told by an endocrinologist that I had all symptoms of thyroid problem yet my blood showed otherwise. I have a lot of chronic fatigue symptoms but when I saw the chronic fatigue team they said I would probably just recover and never helped me :( I’m also being tested for POTS but don’t think I have that. Xx

Thank you for your reply, they went to test last time but it came up that the swab was fine but it can come and go. They won’t treat me anymore as what they’re giving isn’t working and there has been nothing on swab a few times despite bad symtpoms. So I’ve just ordered boric acid suppositories and am going to try that and have also been referred to gynocology to check for any specific conditions gp can’t see. Thank you Xx

Ok, well the first thing I’d do is get the actual result of the HbA1C test - that is, the number. Don’t accept things like “fine”, “slightly raised”, “normal”. Ask for the actual figure.

Even if you don’t think you have POTS, it’s a sensible thing to rule out and it’s good that’s being done 🙂 Yes, CF does gradually improve but it can continue for some time. Pacing yourself is a good way to cope with it. Some areas have specialised clinics that can give advice too.
