Type 2
Hi
Thought I would say hi to everyone and ask a question.

I was diagnosed as type 2 in november and started taking Metformin once a day and began to feel much better as my tiredness and thirst went within a few days. However over the last few days I have become tired and thirsty all the time again does this mean that I need to go back to my gp and up my meds or is this normal?

Hi Chris, welcome. If I were you, I'd go back to the GP to make sure you're on the right dose/drug. Have you made any major lifestyle changes (e.g. diet/exercise)? All these things can have an effect.

Hi Chris and welcome to the forum.
Sounds as if you need to go back and see your GP.
Do you have access to any blood monitoring strips and a meter?
Were you also advised to change your diet ie lower the amount of carbs and the type you eat?

Welcome to the forums chris7 🙂

Have you noticed any other side effects like loosing weight?

Hi Everyone
I will try and answer your questions.
No to diet as I have always eaten a low calorie, fat free, low carb diet (not sure what else I can cut out as everything we were told to cut down on at our desmond day I don't eat in the first place)

On diagnosis my fasting blood was 7.8
On the desmond blood test I was HbA1c was 46

I was given a meter at the desmond day and have used it
Day 1
before eating was 10.4 and 2 hours after was 9.1!
Day 2
before eating was 5.1 and 2 hours after it was 13.0

I have had trouble getting to grips with the meter and my blood (can't seem to bleed enough). The second day was the day that I started to feel thirsty, tired and peeing alot.

I haven't lost any weight, the only way I can keep it down without gaining weight is to eat lettuce, tomato and ryvita and a yoghurt for lunch. Which to be honest is getting boring after only having that for a year! I do sometimes add ham or egg to give a bit of variety! It is too cold now for salad!

Thanks for all your help and I am glad I found this site.

Hi Chris,
have you tried adjusting the finger poker which came with your meter?
If not give that a go 🙂
Symptoms and test results show you have a problem. So you need to go back and see your GP (A) to sort out your meds. (B) to ask for some testing to make sure you are infact type 2 and not a late onset type 1.

Hi Sue
Yes I have adjusted the needle to the highest/deepest point! It's weird cos at work when I have asked a nurse to test me I bleed alot! (I work in a hospital)
I will make an appointment for the GP tomorrow as a few of you have advised that I do that.

Hi Chris, some tips for getting blood:

Make sure your fingers are warm - run them under warm water for a while if necessary.

Hang your arm down for a few seconds first.

When you have pricked, wait a couple of seconds before trying to gently squeeze some blood - your finger will automatically tense and try to close the wound, but if you wait couple of seconds it will relax and the blood will come more easily.

Do you have any history of diabetes in the family? Do you mind saying how old you are, and are you overweight? I'm also wondering whether you may be a slow-onset Type 1, given that the tablets seemed to work, but only for a little while.

I have tried warming my fingers up but I have also always had problems when I have a blood test as my veins seem to disappear! you could say I am a nightmare where blood is concerned!
My brother was diet controlled diabetes type 2.
Yes I am overweight and no matter how much I try to lose it it will not go only stay stationary even though I excercise more. I am 52 so not a youngster!

Forgot to say also I have got the pins and needles (more like electric shocks this time) back!
