Recently my feet and sometimes hands have been very swollen. Is this yet another result of the diabetes? My weight has also increased suddenly. My last HbA1c was 5.9. Am I worrying about nothing?

I'm not sure what to tell you. maybe water retention? Have you been drinking plenty of water? I know it sounds crazy, but one of the best things for water retention is to increase your water intake. You could also try some Taurine or some Asparagus extract tablets; both are good for relieving water retention.

If you're very concerned about it or it doesn't start to clear up in a few days, a trip to the doctor may be in order.

Agree with Steff on drinking more water. The body is very good at holding onto things like water and fat if it thnks there is a drought or famine (goes back to when we were living in caves. Evolution hasn't caught up with modern living). Also try reducing the amount of salt you have if you can.

Also try raising your feet, when you are relaxing, put your feet on another chair or on footstall.

Then if it still hasn't cleared up take mdeical advice.

A while back I experienced this too and I was extremely worried but as I am a type 1 unsure if its the same? My swelling used to include my legs and I used to get this after a hospital visit for Diabetic Ketoacidosis and I associated it with my body adjusting from hi to controlled levels from a sliding scale machine. I sought medical advice from my DSN and she had no idea! I went back to normal after about a week. The water retention tablets didn't reduce or help at all. Hope it clears up for you very soon as I understand how uncomfortable it is!
