I've just had a terrible craving for sweets and I ate a packet of sour snakes and now I feel really guilty - it's the first tiem I;ve eaten sweets (bar to counteract a hypo) since I foudn out I;m pregnant (I'm almost 12weeks) I injected myself with 6units of insulin beforehand but I Shouldn?t have done it should I?! Aaaargh!!! I could cry!

If your insulin dose is right for the CHO intake, why not give yourself a treat once in a while?

Thank you for replying!

That's what I thought before I did it but I feel bad now - is that an acceptable thing to do? I've just checked my blood sugar one hour later and it's 8.5 so I obviously didn't take enough! Could have been worse though I suppose?

Pls excuse me for beign naive - I'm new to all this!

Only recommendation for post meal blood glucose levels is for 2 hours (not 1 hour) after eating, so you may well be on target. 🙂

Cool! Thanks 🙂

The diabetic clinic have me checking one hour after every meal 😡

Don't beat yourself up hun!! I had chocolate yesterday and then felt guilty for ages afterwards, but I figure once every now and again is ok as long as we cover it with insulin 😉

Just be aware that if you intend eating sweets and covering them with insulin, the sugar will act very quickly (it is used for hypos, after all!) and if you inject just before eating the insulin peak will probably miss the sugar peak, so you should probably give it time to get working beforehand, which may vary from person to person. Chocolate is probably a better option, especially dark chocolate, as the fat in it slows the digestion 🙂

Yep, this. As long as you're injecting for it and it;s not an everyday thing, then I've of the opinion that pregnancy is tough enough without beating yourself up about it!

copepod, I've got 1 and 2 hour targets post-meals, as per NICE guidelines. The danger with just having a 2 hour target is that you're peaking at one hour and it goes unnoticed - fine if not pregnant, but not if so!

Ok, scrap that - I replied to this on the pregnancy board and it's since been moved - sorry!

Sorry, Monkey! I thought it was a general thread and might be missed by people who don't visit the pregnancy section. Your comment is still valid wherever it appears! 🙂

Don't feel guilty. We were taught on the DAFE course that as far is diabetes is concerned people with T1 diabetes can eat anything as long as we have the appropriate amount of insulin.

One T2 sulks in the corner now!!
I wish I could cover fruit gums! Really miss them but would have to eat a family bag if I had one!:(:D

Eating sweets is like clicking links on wikis -- you can't do just one. :D

With my first pregnancy I craved sour sweets & sherbet all the time - used to eat lots of those fizzy belt type lace sweets, mmmmm. And Sherbet fountains. And refreshers - my all time pregnancy fave!

Thank goodness I wasn't diabetic then - can you imagine!? 😱

I agree with others, pregnancy is hard enough, allow yourself a treat now and then & don't beat yourself up! Hope you enjoyed them :D

Thank you - I did but being inexperienced (and already mentioned here) I injected too early and had a HIDEOUS hypo (2.1) an hour later and lost the feeling in my tongue!!!!!! Lesson learnt! :(
