Hi all I am posting this here, I guess the answers are probably hidden somewhere in the forums.
I am a new Type 2 bod of some three weeks on 2x 500mg Metformin a day.

Finding my BG readings at about 7.1 -7.3 on getting up at 6:30am I checked at 3am this morning to find it at just 5.6? Obviously, I have a night craving for sugar!

The recent advice is that it is my Liver trying to regulate me whilst I am unconscious.

So a bit of advice would be handy? Should I take my second 500mg when I turn the bedroom light off or seek advice for further meds with the GP? I can at the moment keep my BG readings between 5.4 and 7.0 during the day.

Hi Bryan. You're right, this is something that has cropped up on the forum before, mainly because nobody's found the answer! Try typing Dawn Phenomenon into the search box at the top right hand side of the screen, and you'll see!
It affects both type 1 and Type 2, and it's to do with the liver, which produces a trickle of glucose the whole time to keep your brain, heart, etc ticking over, and it starts gearing itself up for the day ahead and pumping a bit extra out. There isn't really any medication that can overcome it.
Some people find a slow release snack, something proteiny like cheese or a piece of meat, helps,( although the last time I suggested this I was shot down in flames by someone who said that couldn't possibly work!) Everyone tries to find their own solution, and hopefully others will be along to give you their tips.

Thanks for your reply. I will chat to the DB Nurse at my GP practice as well. I am not worrying too much about it as I am pleased with my progress so far. I have my first assessment in April. I have lost a good bit of weight in the last three weeks and I am sure that my stability will improve once I am at a lower weight as well.
