Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi all,
Yes I am very new to this, I was diagnosed in 2019, with type 2 diabetes and I've no idea what I'm supposed to be doing, or following, I've been told to lay off the sweet things, and follow a healthier lifestyle which I joined slimming world, and lost 1stone, due to lockdown IV not been able to go to meetings and it very difficult to follow on zoom, over this past year I have amazingly lost 16kg, but my sugar levels are all over the place just now. I don't seem to have a very close relationship with my Diabetic clinic for one reason I can't get out..... I've tried to build one recently because of my levels and found Kim and Claire to be extremely helpful we are slowly building so I do get to ask a lot of questions and get some great advice, however Kim suggested I get in contact with Diabetic UK as she has found you to be very reliable, so with must of my well formed knowledge on the internet, I finally got it right today Yippi yay..... So I hope I can build some great relationships with you, and get great ideas. Now as I mentioned earlier I am a junk food junky and I am battling to throw it out, I understand it's all mind over matter and will power, which I have very little when it comes to chocolate sweets take aways. I need the support and a gentle kick when needed. My husband shame bless him, his a feeder, I think his under the impression I may ran away when I'm all slim and healthy, yeah I have that to contend with. He has a draw next to his chair filled with all the goodies I love and every night he gives me one small block of chocolate, and I dare not go into it on my own so that's helped me with my temptation, but right now I need a solid row to follow, and get me were I need to be. I am currently taking Yaltarmin and Invokana for my diabetes. I look forward to hearing from you and don't laugh now but I hope I can get back to answering you I'm really no good at technology hahahah have a blessed day stay safe suzy

Hello @Honeybear02 and welcome to the forum. It's great that you found your way here.
It sounds as if you are doing really well in loosing some weight, and it is good to know that you are now getting some help from Kim and Claire in your Diabetes team.
It is also great that your husband has control of the chocolate drawer!

Do you know what your blood sugar measurements are now?
We are all different in what we can eat to get this under control, but many of us (including me) find that as well as cutting down on sweet things, we need to reduce other carbohydrates quite a lot as well, particularly the white ones. Thing like bread, things made with flour, pasta and potatoes.
If you read through other bits of the forum you will find a lot of hints and tips about this.
It may also be of help to have a look at (2) Maggie Davey's letter to newly-diagnosed Type 2s | Diabetes UK
(just click on the link). It shows how this lady went about things
Or have a look at Advice for newbies! which has lots of hints and tips from forum members.

Very best wishes, and hope you find the forum useful

Welcome to the forum @Honeybear02 Glad that you have found us, and well done on the steps that you have already taken to manage your condition.

Have a read around the forum and do ask any questions that you have. Nothing is considered silly on here. Just ask.

Husband Man ,is going to help you if you can convince him a new slimmer you would be way fancible than old you, he already controls your choco addiction, which doesn't need to be a bad thing, as long as it's quality high cocoa fat grade,70% and above, Ditch milk chocolate and ones that are to sweet,it's more satisfying.
It is Will power in the end, but you can still enjoy cream , cheese, butter, a lot of the things you are told not to eat, low fat is NOT the way to, but low carb high fat is, it keeps you full.
The hard part is changing your eating habits, but once you steer clear of the sweet stuff you don't crave it so much.
GO TO IT GIRL !

Hi @Honeybear02, welcome to the site.

It's tricky to know what to do initially but hopefully things will become clearer for you as it does take time.

It might be worth keeping a little food diary to note what you've eaten and your blood sugar readings after. Then, you'll have an idea of the impact your meals are having on you and can adjust your diet accordingly.

This is really useful to start with re what to eat https://www.diabetes.org.uk/guide-to-diabetes/enjoy-food/eating-with-diabetes/i-have-type-2-diabetes.

Let us know if there's anything we can help with.
