Hi everyone my first post . i am due to have a cornea transplant in april ,but my Hb1c have just come back at 81, will this be to high for surgery
i will be so disappointed if it is cancelled

I can't say specifically, but it is a possibility. You need to discuss with either the surgeon or your GP. Was this part of your pre-op tests?

yes had bloods done as part of pre op. im seeing my consultant on 3rd april and my op is planned for 15th april

If you are wanting to know before then maybe your GP may be able to discuss with you.

i think you should have been told what your hba1c would need to be/be below for the operation to go ahead when you attended your pre op appointment, most people are anyway xx

I've just had a quick google and Anitram is close, apparently they look for it to be <69mmol xx

What have they suggested to do to try and lower it? Cos adopting a lower carbohydrate diet can most certainly help do that. If you need help with doing that, shout, because loads of people on here do it successfully.

I agree that if you go seriously low-carb for a while before the op you may find the HBa1c goes down enough?

They've always told me my BG on 'the day' needs to be between X and Y, cos they don't do another HbA1c - can't wait for the lab, needs to be an instant fingerprick test otherwise they'll just cancel and go to the back of the queue. There again never been anything 'that' serious and if they had to scrape me up off the tarmac with a spade etc, I'd fully expect them to not care all that mega much what my HbA1c is, even though my healing would be a lot slower.

I mean that IS the only reason they want our BG to be good - because healing IS compromised because of it when it's high.

So - over to you!
