Over the last few months I have been losing weight, and after a bottle of my home brew wine which is full of sugar I had the classic symptoms of thirst and getting up in the night several times to go to the toilet. However since then the symptoms have gone, perhaps the weight loss has helped. I am going to get a blood measuring kit. I suppose I should go to the doctors but am tempted to see what happens. I have gone so thin, although feel better for loss of weight. I don`t want to get on drugs which lose their effect, and wondering if a fasting diet is the answer as seen on the internet.

Hi Bootleggin, welcome to the forum 🙂 Do please go to the doctors to discuss your symptoms - there is a possibility, based on what you have said here, that you may have a slow-onset type of Type 1 diabetes. Unexplained weight loss is a particularly strong indicator of this. If it is the slow-onset Type 1 then a fasting diet will do you no good at all, and may do you harm if you are already losing weight without trying as the possibility is that your weight loss is not coming from body fat but muscle fibre as well - bearing in mind that the heart is just a big muscle, this is something to be avoided! 😱

Please make an appointment and let us know how you get on, or if you have any more questions 🙂

Hi. I agree with Northerner if weight loss continues without trying, consider Late onset T1.

Thanks for the replies. My weight has stayed the same for a couple of weeks. The symptoms have stopped, although they may well return of course. Think I will see how it goes over the next month or so and if it starts again go to the doctors. Have thrown out the home brew wine, as know how much sugar goes into it!

Depends how strong the home brew wine is. The alcohol ahould stop the affect of the sugar. In fact alcohol often lowers BG levels & if you take medication can send you too low.

It tasted so sweet I am not sure it had fermented properly. I am sticking to proper wine from now on. My level was 3.7 when I checked a week or so back, but I had quite a few pints of lager on the previous day, so perhaps that reduced it.

Maybe get a hydrometer to measure your home brew?
