Relationship to Diabetes
My hubby has recently been diagnosed with Type 2 and needs to loose some weight. He has already been referred to a dietitian and exercise classes by our GP. I would like som recommendations to useful cook books please, so we can both follow a positive eating plan. I have decided that I will join my hubby in improving our diet. Any ideas gratefully received. Thanks in advance.

Hi Nanny Franny, have you had a look at the food forum? Plenty of recipes there.
The main idea is to reduce carbs, not just sugar, however it’s probably wise to do this gradually by tweaking foods you and your husband already enjoy rather than launching into a whole new menu. Perhaps if you post some things you normally eat, people will come on with suggestions of how to make them more diabetes friendly.
Also if trying to reduce weight then using a smaller plate and cutting portion sizes is a good one.
It’s also true that different people can tolerate different amounts of carbs but your husband will only know what he can tolerate if he measures his blood glucose using a meter. Otherwise it’s a long wait to see what the impact of the changes has been, and he won’t know which changes have done the job!

Welcome. I am fairly new to all this but have picked up lots of useful tips from this forum. I was diagnosed last September, and luckily my husband was happy to adapt with me to healthier eating. We eat a lot less carbs and a lot less ready meals as I have been inspired by some of the recipes I have found on here to cook more meals from scratch

The Diabetes UK website has tonnes of ideas. I've also tried Slimming World, and while it's not ended up working for me and my lifestyle, I met loads of T2 diabetics who not only lost HUGE amounts of weight they also saw a reduction and/or completely came off diabetes medication to then control by diet alone. Amazing.
Ultimately though I do think it comes down to reducing carbs, something I'm currently trying to do as part of my pre-pregnancy targets.

I've been low carb since diagnosis & have lost 4 stone. Now within normal BMI levels & a healthy cholestrerol ratio. With cholesterol, the total figure means nothing (despite what the GP says). It's all about the breakdown of LDL/HDL/Trigs.🙂

Hi Nanny franny, welcome. I always recommend the book CARB & CALORIE COUNTER £10.29 from Amazon ~ its the perfect support tool for people who are Carborhydrate counting in diabetes ~ Weight management ~ Portion control ~ and general healthy eating. A majority of folk here abide by the book including myself, as it's so helpful. There's over 1700 coloured photos of a wide range of popular food and drink we consume with clearly displayed colour-coded circles below each photo. It's worthy of purchasing IMO.

Hi.

New here too and here for my Husband. Am trying to get as much advice and guidance as possible and researching everything.
My Husband was 18 + stone and dropped 2.5 on the 5.2 diet and reduced his diabetes to non diabetic - but his numbers have crept up as he admits he hasn't been watchful of what he eats etc......so we are trying to bring his numbers down and look at the low carb options etc.

He eats well but I can see what choices he makes are maybe not the better ones sometimes and this is causing a jump in his readings - so we are both going to have a good look at ourselves and work together.

This is a great site.

Welcome Nanny franny, it is wonderful that you are being so supportive of your husband, it really does help.

I can tell you what the ideal Trigs are, which is 1.5 & under, but don't know the perfect figures for HDL/LDL. Trigs are the most important as it this that has the most effect on heart health.
