Hi guys, I recently saw a support group and finally it was near me!! I have been looking for this for so long. There is a meeting next week and I really want to go but I don't want to go alone. Now I think about it I'm quite scared I don't know why but I feel like nervous. Any tips?

Is there a phone number to call before you go? If so, speak to the organiser, explain how you feel and it will help you to ‘know’ someone even verbally beforehand. Also have you asked your GP surgery if they arrange anything similar, especially for younger people? Ours have a support group there. Hope this helps. Katie

Hi Katie, I emailed them and this is the first support group they're holding near me. I will give them a call soon as well though like you said. I asked my hospital care team they said that they're 'working on it' and its been about 8 months now so I doubt it. Just want there to be someone with me or teenagers as well. Thank you for your reply.

Have you any school friends (assume you're still at school) or young relations who could go with you to the initial meeting. I'm sure the meeting organisers won't mind. If you have to go alone remember you have at least one thing in common with many if not all the people who will be there and you'll soon feel at ease.

Hello @Harveen

I would ask if the support group is for Type 1's as support groups are often attended more by Type 2 because there are more T2's than T1's and if so they'll be older than your age group. That's not to put you off going just something I have found.

You could ask at your clinic if there is a way you could start your own local group of youngish T1's with informal meetings to support each other.

Circle D is a group of young T1's 18-30 who meet in Kent, there is a useful link here for other groups around the country. http://www.circledrocks.co.uk/Other-Groups---Support-UK-Wide.html

I hope you can find a group where you can get support from others in a similar position, chatting to others with the same issues is a great help and the people I have met with diabetes are fabulous 🙂

My sister came with me the first time I ever went to one - I'd happily take Pete or rather he'd take me since I can't drive at the mo - to the one I occasionally go to now which always has mates and relatives of people there. To be honest Harveen - most 'health' support groups are half full of people who don't have the problem concerned - why else would you find half women attendees at a meeting of Prostate Cancer support meetings?

hi all new here .. im type 2 & take metformin and glicazide .. but recently i joined a slimming group changed my diet & tried being alot healthier, the thing is now my blood sugars keep dropping really low average of 2.4 to 3!! if im honest i struggle with my sugars always being too high ..but this i have no idea how to deal with it all .. its very scarey!! when i was told i was diabetic i wasnt given much help just a drs appt every 6 months .. i dont know what to do x

You need to speak to who ever prescribed your medication the Glicazide can cause hypo. You may need it reducing or stopped.

Yeh my sister or my friend are willing to come with me. So hopefully that will make men feel better. Thank you for your reply.

Our support group meets next week, Harveen. Roughly where are you in the country? I'm in the Midlands between Leicester and Coventry.

I'm sure your local group would make you very welcome. We love having new people join us. Everyone has something to offer and I'm sure you'll be an asset to the group.

Wow ! First meeting! I hope it goes really well.

Our group welcomes everyone, whether they have diabetes or not. We have parents, husbands and wives of those with diabetes, and some friends come along. Although a buddy might not find and medical talks the most interesting or understandable, I'm surer they'd meet some nice people, and get you bedded in.

Enjoy!

Hello Haraveen. I have been going to these groups for years. I am on two committees for Duk & 90% of people who go are nice people & in the same boat. They mean well & you will pick some info up. Pls enjoy 😉

Fantastic. I'm sure your Mum could potentially end up learning loads and loads there. In our group, we have a number of spouse/partners, and two sets of grandparents come.

In Leicester there is a group, specifically focusing on children and young people. Lots of their parents go and have built up strong bonds. The young people have the option of joining the choir of T1 youngsters (and a few siblings). They're not all the greatest singers, but the companionship seems invaluable. Seeing the all testing, then twiddling with their pumps, independently managing their bolusing is a sight to be seen.

Let us know how it goes, but whatever you do, give it a few goes if you find you're the only younger person at the meeting this week. Not everyone can be at every meeting. Fingers crossed for you and your Mum.
