Hi, I am peckish and it’s bedtime.
my BG is quite high in the mornings and I am wondering if having a couple of wholewheat crackers at supper time is a good idea.
anyone else have higher bg in the morning? If so, does having a supper make any difference to the first reading the next day?

Personal experience @sharonk, quite often I have DP and BG starts creeping up around 3:00 am so if I’m up and about at 7ish I can get a quick correction dose of insulin in before it gets out of hand but if I eat a digestive biscuit it will be through the roof when I get up, if I remember correctly it was 16 odd last time I had an evening biscuit

A higher blood sugar in the morning is common.
This is due to Dawn Phenomenon. Our helpful livers dump glucose into our bloods at the start of the day to give us energy to get moving.
Someone with a healthy pancreas (yes, this happens regardless of diabetes) will release appropriate amount of insulin and they will not notice a blood sugar rise.
Those of us pancreatically compromised are not able to release the insulin so we see a rise in blood sugars.
It is not usual for this to be related to what we eat the night before.

Thank you, I guess I just have to keep trying things and seeing what impact it has on me. I’ve come to bed not having had anything to eat and my tummy is growling.

Thank you. I can see my highest readings and always know what caused the damage...usually seems to be connected to something I have had for tea the night before, rice, pasta or potato.I am still Testing various things to see what spikes me, I knew those food would but wanted to know the figures. I have two slices of 50/50 bread toasted at lunchtime with butter and something you may think is a little odd but I love it, about a quarter of an oxo cube crumbled on top. It’s an easy thing to have at work and the bread doesn’t give me a huge spike.
I thought I would try to reduce the butter and used lurpack lite spreadable...for the first time after having toast my reading hit double figures. The only difference was the lurpack spreadable. went straight back to the butter!

I know that feeling well, just out of curiosity it’s good to know what’s your BG when you go to bed and how it is when you wake up before you get up, that will help you see if you get and sign of DP, there’s another effect when you actually get up called feet on the floor which affects some people

What the heck is that when it’s at home? I get out of bed and potter about before I do my first test, I don’t do it before I get out of bed. Should I be be doing that rather than pottering about first. I will add, I do get up most days between 5 and 5-30am

Sounds like the toast might be nice, I like bovril spread on mine, good tip I recently found for rice is use basmati and rinse it first in a bowl with your fingers for about 3-4 minutes then rinse 3 times with fresh water, it heavily reduces the starch content so means less carbs

Have a quick test before you get up, quite a few people on here seem to get the FOTF effect, I don’t get it myself my body does all it’s damage when I’m asleep lol

You might find something more nutritious suits you better - I have a mini wok, eggs, cheese and a grater all at hand by the cooker. Scrambled eggs with grated cheese takes two minutes and seems to ensure sound sleep even if I eat it after not eating all day - I often add in a tomato, finely sliced and dropped on top, then a plate put over everything as I move from the kitchen to the table - I am firmly of the opinion that resorting to carby foods when feeling hungry is a sure fire way to end up hungry again in a few hours.

My BG shoots up, sometimes by 3 or 4 points in a matter of 20 mins with FOTF.
If you are hungry at bedtime, have a low carb snack like a chunk of cheese or a boiled egg with a spoon of mayonnaise. No need to go to bed hungry!

That's how I do it. I can't stand the excess starch.
