A medical ward in Raigmore Hospital in Inverness is currently closed to new admissions and transfers due to an increased number of Clostridium difficile cases.
The two cases confirmed is higher than would be expected and for this reason Ward 5C has been closed and NHS Highland is treating the incident as an outbreak.
Clostridium difficile is a bacterium which particularly affects patients on strong antibiotics. It is spread in the faeces through bacteria and by spores which allow the bacteria to survive in the environment.
