Really interesting article. Thanks for posting, even if you do have a vested interest 😉 What is the going rate for "Unicorn poop"? Is it worth my while moving to Australia??

The thing is that people have to change the way they eat in order to get healthier poop so taking a "transplant" is surely only a short term "quick fix" for most people unless they provide the right nutrients and conditions in their own gut for those healthy bacteria to survive and thrive.
I can't believe how much my gut health has improved since I changed my diet and it definitely does make a difference to physical and mental health.

This has been used here I believe to restore the gut flora in cases where long term antibiotic or other therapies has destroyed their own.
Some times thinking outside the box and going back to historical practices can work, my daughter was freaked out by having to order maggots for wound treatment and things like honey impregnated dressings.

I was horrified by my first foal eating it's mother's poop many years ago, but they instinctively know what is good for them. We have so many cultural stigmas which override those instincts. We have not just lost it ourselves but I was even guilty of trying to impose those stigmas on my foal by trying to stop her eating poop and how many dog owners try to stop their dogs from eating horse poop. Thankfully I have now become more enlightened.
I sometimes ride through woodland a few miles away and there is a certain spot on the track that my horses like to stop and eat mouthfuls of mud/dirt. It is an area where there are quite well composted leaves on the surface but it also looks to be quite clay like underneath. They are very clearly drawn to eat this particular dirt either for a mineral it contains or the bacteria or fungi from the composting leaves or perhaps a combination of both. Most horse riders would push their horse on and not let them eat but most horses are unlikely to have access to such ground because they are grazed in well managed open paddocks, so we often prevent them from getting the nutrients they need but then try to supplement their feed with a broad spectrum of minerals and probiotics to compensate. I love how clever nature is. Just wish she wasn't also so cruel!

For these guys, it's really the same thing at one level as taking eg one of the usual antibiotics for C. Diff. You take a course of medication for the acute problem, and make lifestyle changes for longer term protection.

The difference is that the biologics they can produce will (hopefully) be a lot more effective, and with a better safety profile, than the antibiotics.

I have to “refill” with good bacteria after a bout of ulcerative colitis for obvious reasons. A high fibre diet is contraindicated in UC, which makes it harder to get the biome right. It can cause vitamin deficiency, specially Vit K, which is created by colonic bacteria. Fortunately, haven’t had a recurrence for about 6 years. Maybe I’ve grown out of it.
