Up to 1.6 million people in England have been told to isolate in a single week, Guardian analysis has found as the government said the Covid app is unlikely to be changed for weeks.

The number of new UK coronavirus cases climbed to 48,553 on Thursday – the highest since mid-January and the start of the third lockdown – with the upward curve showing no signs of abating, raising fears of a summer of chaos as businesses and households are hit by self-isolation. Sixty-three people were reported on Thursday to have died from the virus.

Ministers have warned the public to expect 50,000 daily cases by the time of England’s major reopening on Monday, rising to 100,000 this summer, but said the success of the vaccine rollout means restrictions should not need to be imposed.

A week ago, after forecasts that up to 10 million would be forced to isolate within a six-week period, Jenny Harries, head of the new Health Security Agency, told MPs the government planned to tweak the Covid-19 app to make it less sensitive and account for the majority of adults now being vaccinated. The need to isolate after exposure to a confirmed Covid case will be dropped for fully vaccinated people in England from 16 August

World-beating game changer :D I don't have it.

Pete had a look at the App the other day as it occurred to him whist we were away the previous week it might be useful to download it for scanning QR codes when we're 'nipping in for a coffee' etc whilst out and about - and much to his surprise, found he already had it, and it said the App expired sometime in August. He rarely turns the wifi or Mobile data on, on his phone. Neither do I. We normally only use em as phones and both use laptops when we need the internet. We realise this makes us dinosaurs but so what!

I don't think it would have been when T&T were texting us so much after we tested positive last December, cos why would it expire in August?

Noticed this last week or so some shelves in shops are sitting empty, others running close, knock on effect I expect.

Yes, I've only recently been venturing out to the local shops, but I have noticed that there are usually quite a lot of empty shelves in the Co-op :(

It looks as if most of the self isolation is happening in North Cornwall. I was shocked when I went to the tip this morning to find every road blocked with queuing traffic leading in the general direction of the beaches. Not seen it like that for years.
The shop shelves have been empty or less than half full for weeks, due to lack of deliveries.

Nobody dares go abroad for their holidays because the government will wait for them to get there then change the rules 😱

Likewise we only take our phones with us in case of emergencies. I prefer my iMac to use for internet and online shopping, as needed.

Still staying put. Theres been no change for us. A third vaccine wont change things either. You can still get covid after jabs and no info about vulnerable peoples reactions.
In fact more symptoms were added to the delta strain but not readily advertised. People dont know if its hayfever as late spring brought on an intensity of pollen all at once.
And...the lateral testing is not reliable.
What a fine mess.

Situation seems to be getting worse here up north, Morrisons Asda especially, not been in Co Op for while, like stuff there but on pricey side.

See Boris done U turn on ping fiasco, now emergency utilities essential workers are exempt from isolating if pinged.

Prices have definitely risen a lot - I've only recently been venturing back into the Co-op abd surprised at the cost of some things 😱 I've been shopping online most of the time, and have noticed that, whereas you could only book a slot 3 weeks hence (if you were lucky) you can now usually get a slot the following day 🙂
