Suicide Bombers

Just back from holiday so apologies if this was already raised.

I managed to pick up a UK paper last Thursday which had an article about suicide bombers beating security checks by concealing the bomb within the body.

Guess the scenario used to illustrate the proposition - bomber passes airport security by claiming to be an insulin dependent diabetic with injection equipment in hand luggage. Once in the air said diabetic goes to the toilet and injects insulin (not sure why he doesn't inject in his seat - I would), bomber returns to seat and a short time later boooom and down comes the plane.

Spanish security obviously hadn't read this fiction as I managed to get through security without showing them a clear plastic bag with my insulin in.

How would injecting whatever it was help? If the injectable liquid is the explosive, then surely you would just have to set off the 3-10ml of it off without distributing it in your own subcutaneous tissue well away from electrical contacts/detonator?

I would say the obvious solution to the problem is to start working ruddy hard on finding a cure for diabetes so we won't need to carry insulin with us anymore.

Even the Daily Fail says (quite a way down) that its scare story is a fictional account. No wonder the reputable news outlets didn't pick up on it.

There is an account of a real bomb in a mobile phone up the bum, but it didn't kill its intended target.

This isn't a new story. The man who had explosives in his underwear a couple of years ago tried to detonate them by injecting something into it. The fear is that whatever he had tucked in his pants (!) would be undetectable if it could be surgically implanted. A long needle would be required to ensure the substance was injected into the implanted device (subcutaneous absorption wouldn't be good enough I don't suppose) and diabetics use nice short needles, so I'm sure some sort of security measures could be taken. Pointless to worry about it though 🙂

I've always put all my gear through the x-ray machines and shown a letter that I'm carrying sharps and medical paraphernalia.

I believe that if travelling with a pump you still will have a pat down.
