Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi there ,
I’m Jan & I have diabetes type 2 since July 2019. Things have been ok since I was diagnosed, however .. my last review was this week 27th September.. bloods have raised so I’m going on Satins for high cholesterol & I may need metformin ..
This has shocked me to say the least .. I’m so addicted to sugar I wish I wasn’t . So I’m currently looking at my diet. I do eat healthy & make good choices, but the biscuits are the ones I love.
So from today … I only had 4 biscuits since 27th September.
Has anyone on here got to the stage where they don’t have anything sweet?
Thanks for reading this .
Jan

You may find that the recipes on sugarfreelondoner web site will satisfy you sweet tooth.
But the more you reduce the sweet things you have you will get used to not having things that are sweet and many things will taste tooo sweet.
However it is not just about 'sugar' but all carbohydrates.
Have a look at this link for some ideas of reducing your carb intake. https://lowcarbfreshwell.com/
Instead of biscuits you could have Nature Valley, KIND or shop own protein bars as they are less than10g carb per bar, I find a third is plenty sufficient at a time so far less carbs than a biscuit.

Your post suggests that you might be fixating on sugar whereas all carbohydrates are turned into glucose. I go for low carb options like protein or nut bars, or extra dark chocolate if I want something that's (sort of) sweet.

Sugar is not the one and only enemy - if you want to eat some of carbs you can cope with as sugar, so not having starchy foods such as grain or potatoes just a couple of biscuits a day plus some berries with yoghurt and a stirfry or salad you would still be eating low carb.

Thank you all for your replies.. I will keep this in mind. I appreciate the advice .

Welcome to the forum @Janlou9

I think some of these eating patterns (at least for me) are habitual, rather than driven by actual hunger or appetite. So I just get used to grabbing ‘something from the drawer’ at various intervals, but it doesn’t really seem to matter what that is. Except that it has to be available and convenient / low effort.

I’ve been living with diabetes since my early 20s, and fairly quickly shifted to nuts as my nibble of choice (having been an enthusiastic consumer of biscuits as a child).

I will still have a biscuit every now and then, but it’s more like 1-2 a week.

One other fairly easy control for me is simply not to have whatever it is around. If it’s not in the house, it doesn’t call to be from the cupboards! 🙂

Hi there Jan, 18 weeks ago I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Since talking to the diabetes nurse I’ve been on a very low carb eating plan using the carbs and calorie counter book. It’s now been 14 weeks on the plan I’ve lost 2 stone and on my recent 3 month blood test my result has gone down from 60 to 45! I have always had a sweet tooth but gave up all biscuits, cakes etc. They sweet treat I have is blueberries, raspberries and Greek yoghurt with a squirt of bulk zero calorie syrup. Keep positive!
Kind regards
Debbie

Nuts are good as although they're mostly fat it's around 90% or thereabouts unsaturated, the so-called 'good' fat. Dry roasted peanuts are one of my snack options, and I'll also often have a handful of walnuts with some bite-size pieces of apple. I find that works best with a sweet apple like Royal Gala.

The only thing to mind with nuts is the calories, if calories matter to you that is. A 100g pack of my dry roasted, for example, contains a whopping 599 calories.

Some people do have a bad reaction to statins but there are different ones which suit people better. I hope you did not continue to take than with that immediate reaction.
