Hi I have been using a powdered sugar swetener instead of sugar in my tea thinkin git was better but after reading the dr Bernstein book I am really confused The one I am using has maltodextrin in it along with Aspartame and acesulfame which I thought was ok but now I am not so sure? So what is the best powdered sugar sweetener to use please ??

Personally I don't like artificial sweetners of any kind in my tea or coffee, so I do with out in my tea and rarely drink coffee as I can't drink it without coffee mate or similar. It is matter of personal taste.

many people like sacharine, it is supposed to be quite good. I'm sure others will be able to make other suggestions.

The other thing to consider is by gradually reducing the amount of sugar or sweetener in your drinks, over a few weeks, you will gradually reprogramme your tastes, which helps in reducing cravings for sweet tasting foods, too.

Although I could inject extra insulin for suagr etc, I prefer to have unsweetened hot drinks, except on the few occasions when I need a hot sugary drink after a long cold active day in the hills, for example.

i have tried giving it up but I just really enjoy the small spoon i have and woudl liek to find an acceptable sweetener that does not affect my BG's

Nutrasweet/Aspartame/Splenda was always pretty zero carb - though I'd imagine you are probably not going to be drinking enough tea to cause a problem if you only have one spoon in each?

Thank you . I have just received my meter so I will be able to check things out better now. Just checked about an hour after a rather large brekkie of 2 sausage, 2 eggs and 2 linseed vogal breads and it was 6.8?? dont know much about numbers yet so advice on that woudl be really apperciated please

6.8 at 1 hour after eating is perfection (even if it went up a bit between 1 and 2 hours it's likely to be pretty spot on). Well done!

Oh Thank you I am so worried about all this and I had 2 small bits of bread so I am ssuming that means I can eat a small amount of carbs? Do you knwo what a good recommendation of amounts would be I know the Bernstein book says 6 12 and 12 which I dont think i will manage would 100g to 150g a day be ok?

I would say that you shouldn't regard Berstein's limits as set in stone - use your meter to experiment and find what amount you can tolerate well. 🙂 30g a day is very low-carb and not always necessary, so don't restrict your diet to this extent if you don't want to or don't have to!

I've read some Bernstein snippets that make a lot of sense, but I just don;t believe there can ever be a 'It Must Be Like This' approach to D.

Everyone is so different. Many T2s seem to find 100g-150g fine. Some cope brilliantly with more, others need less. None of that matters - what matters is what works for YOU and allows you to live an enjoyable life/eat a diet you enjoy too. Somewhere in the middle of all that will be your perfect D plan - and once you've found it it will be sustainable because it will be suited to you.
