Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Just need to vent my spleen! I work in a primary school and whilst everyone has been supportive since my diagnosis I am getting slightly twanged off with peoples misconception of my type 1 diabetes and what i can and can't eat and why I might have the occassional hypo. I try to explain that I am allowed to eat things which contain sugar in moderation, that a rich tea biscuit will not kill me but i still get people questioning me and challenging me about my dietary choices every day. I have tried to explain the concept of a balanced diet but it seems to fall on deaf ears. The worst offenders are those who have relatives with the condition who therefore think they know it all. There. Rant over. Thank you! 😛

Hi Becky

Unwanted / inaccurate advice isn't helpful - often based on old views of how to deal with type 1 diabetes or confusion with type 2 diabetes. It's why I don't tell colleagues about my condition, but that's not very helpful advice, nor very practical for most people.

It's hear, hear, by the way - short for hear her / him, hear her / him

On the positive side, doesn't it also show that they care about you? But I guess it does depend on how they're saying it.

Andy (spin merchant) HB 🙂

Hi, I think this probably gets to a lot of us from time to time. You are in good company.
My boss irked me today with a throw-away comment about not worrying about Millie as we will be able to gage from her morning test that she'll be ok for the day ( hmmm, i wish) ..... NHS manager 😱 !!

Great anuty flo's best mate Daphane has a lot to answer for🙄

You do get used to the Diabetic police and it all goes above your head.. Mind you; you will also learn how to get your own back..

A nice techincal spin of HbA1c's, insulin profile and management normally puts them off from ever even hinting at any advise:D

One of the best one's I had, was at a Christmas Fate at Les's work I won the raffle which was a Christmas cake... One of the girls said oh Jo won't want that as she and Les are diabetic😱 She was hoping to get the cake for her daughter...

But somebody did look up and say, so if they don't eat cake their family do!

Hi Bec i really know how you feel ! (mader than mad) 😡😡. I hate beeing told what to do at the best of times but t1 for over 45yrs and getting a stupid look from people who THINK they know better ! when you eat something that is on there list ! (dont get me started). I feel better having a rant now !! Keep at it !! Stay 😎

Lol, this post has made me chuckle, at least it is something we all have in common, pesky and nosey peeps who think they are our DSN.

...I just reply to those who interfere that, I am the one 'thinking like a pancreas' and dont need them to either, thank you very much...

At least my family, close friends and other half know better to not give me the 3rd degree...I'd be right down their throats!!!!!😛

I know how it feels to have people question the food you eat like its any of their business! It is more of a case that they need to keep their noses in their own business really, I had this where I used to work and it gets extremly annoying and very irritating. Some people however, are genuinly interested and curious about diabetes and they are always a pleasure to talk to, these are the people who give a dam!

I know exactly what you mean. People get short schrift from me and I tell them exactly what to to with teir opinion. At work I have been reported a number of times for telling people to **** off and keep their opinions to themselves if they can't find out the facts first.

we've probably all suffered from this at some point. I hate it. I believe it's made me conscious about eating in front of me and now as soon as someone makes a comment about my food or what I'm eating, it immediately gets my back up.

Once I've been ono DAFNE I fully intend of confusing the hell out of people by blurting loads of jargon and numbers at them!! then ask them what they think I should eat 😉 hahaha lol

At least they are interested !! I had this all my life with my veggie diet 'are you allowed to eat .....?' as I pointed out , I am allowed to eat what I like , i choose differently from them- that's all !
My dietician pulled me up quite sharply when I said something like now I can't eat chips - 'excuse me- anything in moderation ' it helped me with my answers when people 'intrude'
It gets so wearing though when your friends think they know about it all ! I have to say though that before I was DX I didn't know the involvement of fat and the balance of carbs , I too thought it just involved cutting out sugar !

I've been cooking and planning meals for a Type 1 diabetic for 17 years, and doing Weight Watchers for about eight... I STILL get the 'are you allowed to eat that?' thing and it drives me BONKERS!!!

YES! I'm allowed to eat whatever I want. There are things I need to avoid unless I want to be ill (like fats and red meat), and things I CHOOSE to avoid because they contain empty calories (lots of calories, very little nutrition), and things we as a family hoose to avoid because they provoke BG spikes or unexpected drops.

MUCH harder to cope with is Big Sis's lactose and gluten intolerances.

I used to get this a lot, from my family at least many years ago, but now my knowledge exceeds that of anyone else around me, even my DSN, so I now enjoy educating/correcting folk when/if they ask/advise about my condition......🙂

Puts me right off people sticking their noses in where it doesn't belong, should I fancy a particular food then I'll eat it and cover with insulin, no concern of anybody's what we choose to it eat😡 Our diabetes, our concern so butt out people:D

I'm the food police!

Well, only for Carol though😉

Blimey!! At least I know I'm not alone now!
Today I had the very helpful 'Why can't you control your blood sugar? My sister in law has had diabetes for 20 years and SHE doesn't have hypos.'
Well isn't she the lucky one. I could have pointed out that I have only been on insulin for 5 weeks but I chose to ignore her completely and turn my back on her. I think she got the message!

Oh really? Possibly because she always has high BGs?
