Such a weird thing this week

Hi all,

So I've started the 800 calories a day thing this week (will report next week), but one thing I've noticed so far, is that my daily lows are a lot lower than before. I've been ping-ponging between my usual 5.7 to down to around 4.2 ish all week. Then today I was at 6+ at waking and have been there all day. Despite only having 200 calories with a meal replacement.

So there's definitely something weird going on. I was thinking maybe my liver was dumping glucose so raising my level to make up for the loss of glucose from carbs from food.

Haven't really felt much different from the 800 calorie thing yet to be honest. I guess I was already doing loads of veg on a night, so not a lot of change there and I just don't have much for lunch anymore (meal replacement shake).

I'll have to spend some time reading up on my diabetes books this weekend. See if any explain BG rises when doing low calorie diets.

Hiya. I haven't heard of this 800 cal thing? Not sure i could stick to a diet like that, seems very low (I hope its short term). You could well be right about the dumping going on. It could be the body's reaction to the low intake and trying to make corrections. I read somewhere it takes something like 40 cals/hour just to sit still and breathe, (960 per day), this increases the heavier you are - so these low cal diets can certainly upset the balance a bit. Please go carefully on it.

It has come out of research to see if Type 2 can be put into remission. The research is commonly referred as the Newcastle Diet, though the official title is the Direct Study. It was headed by a Professor Taylor who has also written a book.

Got another 6.4 this morning on the meter, which is definitely up from where I am when I'm doing regular low carb, so I have a strong suspicion that the liver is reacting to the calorie deficit. Either way, not really noticing that I'm on a diet yet so much, which is pretty good.

I think things often go weird before settling down when the bod encounters big changes. Good luck with the 800 cal!

Thanks Eddy, much appreciated. Must admit to being a bit freaked out that on a low cal regime like this, my BG could go higher than I've been for quite a while, but I'll stick with it for another week or two and re-evaluate. I'm not sure having higher BG levels is a good tradeoff for rapid weight loss, because I was losing slowly but surely on the low carb diet anyway, but wanted to try this out (lets just say I like measuring and experimenting with things).

if you think 6.4 is a problem, then welcome to the human race🙂 Its not pathological.

I’m pretty sure non-Ds would vary within that range.

Fasting for non-D's is supposed to be < 5.5. Obviously "fasting" not necessarily the same as "waking".

I‘ve seen some Libre traces from nonnies which are far wobblier than one might have expected. 🙂

Not a problem, just different than my more normal 5.5-ish is all. I was expecting some variation because the liver would be taking over for the supply of glucose (not having enough from the food I'm eating, so it has to produce it from other places). Just wasn't really sure that there would be a raise in overall levels.

Its now back down to 5.5 waking today, so maybe that was just liver adjusting to the new normal. Will continue on and see.
