Stupid stupid stupid!!

So annoyed with myself. I don't prime my mixed insulin as I was told I didn't need to if I was injecting a decent amount. However I still prime if I have just inserted a new cartridge so that I know the plunger has met the injected pusher thing properly.

But this evening I forgot to do this!!! My pen jumped twice before meeting the cartridge then injected the remaining amount. I have no idea how many units I missed due to the jumps :(

With a mix insulin, you should always give it a good shake every time to make sure its well mixed, and you should prime your pen before every injection as well.

John.

Don't beat yourself up Megan, these things happen from time to time and usually have such an impact on us that we usually don't repeat the error for a very long time! It's the diabetes teacher giving us a mental rap on the knuckles. How many units should you have injected, and how many does it normally take to prime the pen? This should give you an idea of how many units you may have missed. I would just keep an eye on your levels. I presume you haven't been told how to correct yet with your fast-acting?

I would also recommend always priming your pen with an airshot - I was advised 2 units for mine, although do less now I have a half-unit pen. The amount you 'waste' is minimal, and in my opinion sin;t a waste anyway as it's important to know your system is working 🙂

Try not to worry, just chalk it up to experience.

I had mixed it well. I just forgot to prime for the mix.
I always prime for my rapid. I don't know enough about how the rapid works with me to do a correction.
Think I could have possibly missed 4-8 units. Oh well will have to chalk it up to experience and then walk it off shopping tomorrow

Ooh! It might be a 'costly' mistake then! 😉 :D

Think I will survive over night. Just done 2hr after bloods and at 7.2 so not a total disaster

Thing is you'll be missing some longer acting insulin Megan, so be prepared to wake up feeling yukk and being really high.

If you happen to wake up in the night, I should test if I were you .....

Think of it as a learning tool and it will be a reminder for the future. We all do daft or silly things from time to time so don't beat yourself up over it.

Was at 8 during the night and 10 this morning so a fixable disaster at least!

Ah! Glad to hear it wasn't too bad Megan 🙂 Might be worth asking your DSN what you should do should it ever happen again 🙂

Ill will ask her next time I see her x

I had a bit of 'plunger creep' occasionally on pens - especially in warm weather (where the rubber bung and the plastic poky thing seem to get slightly separated somehow and you end up 'injecting' an unknown portion of air, just as you describe.

Convinced me that I needed to do an airshot before every injection with any pen.

Hope the rest of the day runs OK fo you.
