Coffee drinkers have another reason to celebrate today. New data from the Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) suggests that drinking the brewed beverage may ease the condition known as Tinnitus in women. While this is certainly not a major breakthrough in medical history, this does offer some comfort to those who suffer this strange condition.

A simple—yet unexplained—ringing in the ears, Tinnitus is actually not a “condition” of itself, but a symptom of other physiological imbalances. It can be caused by exposure to an extremely loud noise (like one night at a rock concert) or prolonged exposure to a moderately loud noise (like working daily in a construction site).

Once the trigger is gone, a characteristically incessant ringing remains. Along with ringing, a sufferer might experience buzzing, humming, hissing, or even whistling that sounds like it comes from inside the body (as opposed to an exterior source). The severity of the condition, of course, varies from person to person.

The data published by BWH comes from data gathered in the Nurse’s Health Study II. This all-female study tracked tinnitus in more than 65,000 women aged 30-44 since 1991.
