Relationship to Diabetes

I posted about half a year ago about trying to get back on track with my diabetes. I suffer badly with anxiety and depression and hadn't been taking my medication at all. I did have a blood test however I never had a follow up blood test.

My partner and I really want to try and have a baby however I am extremely worried about this due to my diabetes. I have managed to make an appointment for another blood test, even though I know my levels won't be good. Due to my anxiety I had reordered my Metformin but never collected it. The pharmacy has now agreed to send it to me to help with my anxiety.

I know I need help getting everything under control and am very worried about speaking to the diabetes nurse. The only time I spoke to her she basically told me off saying I shouldn't have diabetes at my age (29 and have it due to other medical factors).

I am starting to feel like this is all too much for me to handle and I feel like I am a huge problem to everyone.

Oh bless you you’re dealing with so many complex feelings. It’s worth a chat with a specialist who supports conception and pregnancy for diabetics so you can see what would be helpful and what support is available. You may find that having people with a specific interest in pregnancy and diabetes means side stepping the body shaming DSN and gives you a fresh start. You will probably be put on folic acid and may have your diabetes meds changed anyway so try not to put it off for fear of what might be said. Good luck! Having a reason to control your diabetes may be the push that helps you.

Hi. Do have the Metformin which is a very safe drug although it doesn't work miracles. Your DN was stupid to have said you don't have diabetes at age 29. She obviously has not heard of late onset T1 (LADA) which can occur at any age. My slim nephew ended up in hospital with DKA at age 22 and has been on insulin ever since.

Welcome back, Lex.

Really sorry to hear about the experience that you've had. It's not helpful to shame people into action as there's a very valid reason why things are difficult at times.

You're not a problem at all and many women have been through this and had successful pregnancies. Yes, you'll need some additional support but that's a good thing as far as your health is concerned.

Being a type 2 means you have a bit more control over things so early planning and support can make a great difference.

We're right here if you need us and are happy to support you in every step of the way. Start small with the fab advice above and just research what support may be available.

You're welcome to post within our pregnancy section to hear from those who have been in your shoes https://forum.diabetes.org.uk/boards/forums/pregnancy.14/ edited as I meant the pregnancy section!)

It's likely, as mentioned that they will simply give you some folic acid and advise on dietary changes which is more than manageable.

Let us know if there's anything we can help with and you can always give DiabetesUK a call for judgement free advice or inbox me directly.

Hi @Lex I remember you from your previous thread 🙂 You shouldn’t be scared to speak to your nurse. The nurse is supposed to be helping you not judging you. Is there anyone else you could see if you’re not happy with her?

You could look at the Pregnancy section here. A number of the posts are about people who aren’t pregnant but are planning to conceive. Others have had worries too and struggled with high sugars, so you might feel better reading some of their posts:
