Struggling with Carbs

Are you keeping an honest food diary? That is a good place to start. It helps you to see where you can make cuts to your diet if you need to lose weight.

For me, going low carb has really helped control my eating and each time I go back to normal eating, like I did over Christmas and Boxing Day, I very rapidly lose control and I suffer horrendous cravings and my BG levels spike up and then drop, whereas eating low carb I don't feel like I have to impose any will power and my levels are much more stable. It is also a satisfying way to eat and I feel so much fitter and healthier on it.

That’s my biggest problem is food. I don’t eat healthy but not bad either. I have days where I hardly eat then days where I pick all day. I rarely have breakfast and my portions are on the larger size. I know my levels are my fault but weighing and counting carbs seems time consuming and I need to try and work it out around my days better

I too have days like that where I eat very little and skip meals and some days when I graze and some days when I eat 3 meals a day. Because I stick to low carb foods, none of it is a problem and I don't have to weigh my portions or do a great deal of carb counting, just eyeball things. The Carbs and Cals book can help you with that but keeping portions of carb rich foods very small is important and bulking up on lower carb foods and fats which keep you feeling full. I eat lots of cheese and nuts and cream and eggs and more cheese and fatty meats and salads and leafy green veg. I don't eat bread or pasta or rice and potatoes just occasionally. It sounds really radical (particularly not eating bread) but once you find low carb foods you enjoy and start eating more fat it become so much easier.

There was a study some years ago that said people who skipped breakfast generally weigh more than those who don’t.

With food, most of the battle is emotional and there’s no quick fix for that. However, picking rather than eating proper meals is something that you could address maybe. The amount of calories you’ll be taking in is probably more than you’d think. Also, and equally importantly, you’ll be missing out on nutrients.

Concentrating on eating well is the key, I think. Plenty of green veg, a rainbow of other veg, fruit, whole grains, pulses, protein, etc. Trying to fit in as much nutrition as possible helps stop emotional eating too.

See eating regular is important in my opinion, for nutrition as Inka says & to help keep bg steady, find when going long periods without food liver starts throwing out glucose which is unpredictable & difficult to bolus for, especially so when skipping breakfast so rarely miss eating something on waking.
