Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi all,
New to this and to Diabetes.
My 5 year old Daughter was diagnosed in Jan 11 by accident. She has been in partial remmission till this week. A throat infection seems to have tipped her body over the edge and she is now on insulin injections 4times a day. I am struggling with what foods and insulin amounts and feel like im missing something vital.
Any advice?

Hello Scarletteve,
I'm not Type 1 or a parent of a diabetic child but I just wanted to send you a hug anyway. I can only imagine what you are going through. We do have some wonderful parents on here though and I'm sure some will be along with loads of advice and support really soon. Take care. XXXXX

Hi scarleteve. Welcome 🙂

Sorry to hear your daughter has had to go on to insulin. What insulins is she on ?

ANd have you been offered any dietary advice or a place on a course such as DAFNE ?

As Blythe said, the parents section on here is second to none, with years of experience between them all.🙂

Rob

Welcome Scarletteve.

Sorry you need to join us, but you're in the right place for help from fellow parents of children with diabetes, and people who lived through childhoods with diabetes. Good to hear your daughter is on 4 injections a day, as that gives more flexibility for eating, activity etc than 2 injections per day.

Children with Diabetes is a group of parents which runs an email list, that you might also like to join - see http://www.childrenwithdiabetes.com/uk/

Courses are great, but DAFNE is only for adults who have type 1 diabetes themselves. Many hospitals run their own courses for parents, so it's worth asking.

Hi Scarletteve and welcome to the forums - you should definitely take a look at

http://www.childrenwithdiabetesuk.org/

My advice to you would be to ask for regular contact with your daughter's DSN. The DSN should be able to guide you through how to match the insulin to food. You need to ask about sick day rules, as when you are ill your blood glucose rises and you can start to produce ketones. Its important that your daughter's nurse tells you what to do and when to seek medical advice.

Hi Scarletteve, sorry to hear about your daughter's diagnosis :( There is such a lot to learn, but you will get there. I'd suggest getting a free pack from JDRF at http://www.jdrf.org.uk/page.asp?sect...onTitle=KIDSAC and also a brilliant book Type 1 Diabetes in Children, Adolescents and Young Adults by Ragnar Hanas which will really help you to get a handle on things. We have some lovely parents here too, so post any concerns you have in the parents section, plus the group Copepod mentioned are excellent.

Please feel free to ask anything that may be worrying you - no questions is considered 'silly', so fire away! 🙂
