Hi Stacey, sorry to hear you are finding it tough going. It is still very early days and you are trying to get used to the diagnosis and what it entails. A drastic change to the way you eat is bound to make you feel deprived and highlight how much your life has changed, and it probably doesn't help that hubby is sticking his head in the sand and not being very supportive.

Try to keep your spirits up, there is no reason why, maybe a year down the road or less, you might be telling us how much better you feel - fitter, healthier and full of life! I'm not making it up, it really can happen! Try to approach things logically, you sound as though you are floundering a bit at the moment and not quite sure what's good or bad and what you should do. Have you got the books The GL Diet for Dummies and Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker? They are an excellent investment if you haven't, and only a few pounds each. A lot of people find that Gretchen's book makes them feel much better about managing their diabetes, and knowing what to expect and how to help yourself is very empowering 🙂

Come here any time and ask your questions - there will always be someone here who will listen and try and help 🙂 Hope you can get an appointment soon.

A couple of questions come to mind (in addition to the general and food points made by Northerner):

How old is your baby / child now?

How is your physical exercise level now?

While it's difficult to get time to yourself with a baby / child, getting outdoors and walking round a park / riverbank / canal towpath etc several times a week is a good basis for exercise and often improves mood too - just requires you and baby / child to be adequately wrapped up.

Hi Stacey, I hope you feel better soon. Many people go through the feelings you have now, so you are not alone. We all need to take time to adjust to what is happening and think of food in a different way.

It does not mean we can not have sweets or cakes, we just have to be a bit more selective and have them as a treat ot part of a meal. Although we need to cut down on carbs, in order to have a good/balanced diet don't cut them out completely.

There are lots of ideas on this forum so have a browse and ask as many questions as you like. We are here to help each other.

Hi Stacey - it sounds as though you are feeling quite isolated following your diagnosis. Do you have any close friends that you can chat to?

Hubby may be in denial - he may be worried about you but doesn't want to talk about it as that would make things real. My husband got into his head that I didn't inject any more - I inject five times a day and do so often when sitting next to him, when I found this out I was a bit shocked.

Try and have a chat with him as the Diabetes is going to be there for ever now, or maybe leave some leaflets were he may read them. I can't guarantee that he will but he may find it a little less threatening than talking.

You could also check if your GPs surgery has or knows of a local support group for people with Diabetes.

Hope that you get some answers and some support.

Hi Stacey,

You are a new mum and that in itself is a struggle so don't be so hard on yourself.
You have had GD so you have a good idea of what you should be eating. I would suggest that you take one day at a time and if nobody else seems interested then praise yourself if you have a good day. It will get easier when you see the results from eating sensibly and, as Copepod says, take that lovely baby for walks as the exercise will lower your blood sugars. Make sure you do not get dehydrated too.
Also make sure you have the correct foods to eat when you go shopping as it is difficult not to eat the treats if there is nothing else available.
Things will improve.
Take care.
