The growing use of statins has led to a 40 per cent fall in the number of strokes among Britons, research suggests.

Huge advances in the treatment of high cholesterol and high blood pressure have led to a sharp decrease in the number of strokes in the past 16 years.

The prescription of statins, drugs administered to lower cholesterol levels, has been credited with helping to dramatically lower rates of strokes amongst older people, the group most vulnerable to the condition.

More than eight million Britons take statins, whilst an additional six million take drugs to lower blood pressure.

Unfortunately this study doesn't bring all contributory factors into account and makes an association rather than exploring these other factors. I would recommend anyone on statins take a look at this documentary for some interesting information regarding the application of statins:

I hate statins and had to stop taking them. The pain they were causing could never be a good thing.

I also stopped once I learned more about them, and also had side-effects :(

That is an interesting video above, I had at time wondered why doctors are so keen to hand out these drugs. It certainly makes you think.
