HEALTH workers braved the rain to take industrial action in a dispute over pay yesterday.

One striker said NHS staff "dedicate their lives to looking after people, but we need looking after too."

Workers from unions including GMB, UNISON and Unite formed a picket line outside Derriford Hospital as the Government says it "can't afford" a one per cent pay increase for NHS staff.

Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust, which runs Derriford Hospital, said around 80 staff had exercised their right to strike.

It was the first NHS strike over pay in 30 years and the Royal College of Midwives took industrial action for the first time in its history.

Apparently, it would cost £300m to award the pay increase - the government threw away £100m on the Virgin West Coast Mainline fiasco. They've probably already spent at least £300m bombing Iraq :(
