Wonder if anyone has experience of ACR results being ‘marginally positive’ - my teenage son had a result of 5.3, so they did a morning sample, which was similar. Now having to do the three morning samples. Stressing massively, and not helped by the fact that we seem to have the least experienced nurse on the team - lots of “I don’t know, I’m not sure” and the non-reassuring, “I’m a parent; I’d worry too!”

I am not familiar with this test but labs tend to do lots of tests and flag results that do not fit in the range. Depending on the lab they then use words like marginally to show how much they have exceeded the expected numbers. For this test the flag point is 5.0 so 5.3 is marginally more positive. Now this might indicate kidney disease which would be serious or he might be slightly dehydrated which a few glasses of water would sort.

I am not surprised you are worried but lets hope its just a sign of dehydration.

At least they are investigating which is a good start. A lot of my levels approach the top value but don't trigger the flag and I struggle to get the GP to investigate why I am so close to the point were he is obliged to investigate.

All the best and keep in touch.

Hi @Emmy and welcome to the forum.

Obvious question, does your son have T1 diabetes?

It’s always better that it’s flagged and investigated just in case it’s kidney issue related but it can also be raised after exercise, because of a UTI, dehydration (even a little) etc.

Have you got an appointment with the GP or endo to discuss the results?

Yes, type 1 - sorry, should have said!
No problem. Now we have that cleared up I will leave to our experienced T1 membership to offer ideas.

Is that albumin creatinine ratio? That‘s a kidney function check to see if the kidneys are filtering well as far as I understand it - over time tiny holes can occur in the kidney’s filter papers (not actual science!) and allow small particles of proteins to get through into the urine.

Early morning urine has been filtered and collected over a longer period, so it’s important for those reviewing the results to know when the sample was collected.

It’s good that they are keeping an eye on things, but try to relax. A marginally positive result does not spell disaster. Trying to keep his BGs in range as much as possible, and his blood pressure normal will help.
