Hi everyone.
Newly qualified as OT, working full time and parent of 2 year old. I’m Type 1 & struggling with managing stress which is escalating my levels during work which is making me really anxious which doesn’t help with my levels.. any tips or strategies on how to manage would be much appreciated x

Welcome @CuthM 🙂 When I was very stressed, I found Mindfulness and controlled breathing really helpful. The breathing can be done in a couple of minutes and really calmed the stress.

Hi @CuthM , sorry to hear you've been feeling so stressed lately.

Are there any of your friends or family members who know how you're feeling, or is there someone that you feel comfortable talking this through with? If so, if you find this helpful, we have a website page on starting the conversation that might be worth a look - https://www.diabetes.org.uk/guide-to-diabetes/emotions/talk-about-feelings

You may like to see our webpage on diabetes and stress for some general guidance around this - https://www.diabetes.org.uk/guide-to-diabetes/emotions/stress

As well as this, please do feel free to give us a call on our helpline number on the top right-hand side of this site. We're open Monday to Friday, 9 am - 6 pm, and are happy to talk things through and listen to any worries

Personally, I would agree with Inka that mindfulness does help me de-stress too.

If you're curious, there are some free NHS resources around mindfulness here - https://www.nhs.uk/mental-health/self-help/tips-and-support/mindfulness/ that you may wish to take a look at 🙂

Sorry to hear you are finding life stressful at the moment @CuthM , and how that the stress is negatively impacting your levels :(

Are the rises you are seeing consistent enough for you to adjust doses for the periods when you are generally experiencing them?

At a previous job, there was a fairly persistent level of busy-stress with deadlines and meeting requirements which was not present when I was on holiday. So I got used to expecting to adjust basal doses and meal ratios when not in the office!

As others have said, mindfulness and breathing exercises have been very helpful during recent periods of stress for me. There are settling techniques that can take just moments, as well as a practice that you can develop, and build on, which can help build resilience and the ability to stay present and focussed during times of turmoil.
