Hi all
In the last week or so I seem to have a continual strange taste in my mouth. I keep flossing and cleaning my teeth hoping it will go. I am keeping my daily carbs around 75gm-90gm and am trying hard to lose the weight I put on during lockdown so sticking to healthy eating. I am also drinking plenty of water. I did have a bladder infection but it cleared up with antibiotics (course finished). Has anyone else had the same thing? Any suggestions welcomed. Thanks.

Weird taste (metallic) and sore throats and headaches were the first symptoms we had of Covid. Didn’t develop a temp until a couple of days later, then 2 of us lost our sense of taste and smell.

Sorry to hear this @Felinia

Hope it disappears, rather than turning into anything nasty!

Fortunately(?) I've had this taste (almost sweet) for over a week now and no other symptoms. My initial thought was diabetes related, so I did a dip strip and there was no glucose in the urine. I was shielding until 1 August and still keep well clear of people and shops as well. My area has had only 2 cases in just under a month, so I have slowly been regaining some confidence about venturing out, without complacency - enough to get back into the swimming pool 4 days ago! I have my next HbA1c in October and I think a trip to the dentist might be in order.

Can I ask is it a sweet, peardrops kind of taste/smell on your breath? I just ask because I see you're relatively newly diagnosed. I was a slow onset type 1 and a horrible taste was one of my only symptoms, which with hindsight was caused by ketoacidosis. Just a thought and I'm probably barking up the wrong tree, but if it continues I'd ask a pharmacist to check for ketones (you can buy urine dipstick tests yourself) just to check you're not a misdiagnosed type 1 or other type. Hopefully nothing like that but don't leave it 6 months like I did!

Good news is that it is not peardrops, and does not smell - I did the hand over the mouth, breathe out and quick sniff test. It's almost like smoked bacon. Also the dip strip test I did showed no ketones either. Results next month will hopefully give answers.

You didn't say the doc was already going to test you for something they think might be causing it.

No, just my HbA1c and my annual review

Well strange taste is nowt to do with your diabetes if it ain't peardrops, Felinia - as far as I know.

That's reassuring. NHS suggests it might be dental, so I'll see if my dentist has re-surfaced next week. They made and cancelled the last 2 appointments in May and July. Not heard from them since. Does not seem so noticeable today.

It could be the antibiotics. I take penicillin everyday ( no spleen) and always have a dry and yukky taste in my mouth. I don’t know for certain it’s the meds but nothing gets rid of it. I don’t have bad breath, Mr Eggy would have let me know, and I‘ve got used to it. In your case if it doesn’t go soon a visit to doc or dentist may be in order.

Yes - dentist is next on the list. Normally I go every 3 months, but it's been January since I last went. Also I am aware that although I've finished my antibiotics it can sometime take a little time before the side effects go.

Pleased to say the taste has gone. I think it must have been the antibiotics for the bladder infection. But I'm booked into the dentist anyway.

Ah that’s great news @Felinia 🙂
