MORE than 280,000 people a year are diagnosed with diabetes — the equivalent to more than the entire population of Swansea — according to new figures.
Diabetes UK has called for more focus on preventing type 2 diabetes and said that if the rate of people getting the condition continues the consequences could be "disastrous".
Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body doesn't produce enough insulin to function properly, or the body's cells don't react to insulin. In type 1 diabetes, the pancreas does not produce any insulin.
There are currently 12,500 people living with diabetes in Swansea, 9,000 in Neath Port Talbot and 10,500 in Carmarthenshire.
