BOTH of these chronic diseases are on the rise in Australia, but these simple lifestyle changes can lower your risk of getting them, or help you manage their symptoms.
- Diabetes Australia says:
1. Know your risk and keep a healthy weight
More than 2.5 million Australians are at a high risk of developing type 2 diabetes, but many are unaware until it is too late. Excess weight, particularly around the abdomen, can significantly increase the chances of type 2 diabetes. For men, their waist circumference should be less than 94 centimetres; for women it should be less than 80 centimetres.
Others with a higher risk include women who have had gestational diabetes or anyone with a close family history of type 2 diabetes, even those within a healthy weight range.
