Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hullo,

my name's paul, 37 and new diagnosed with diabetes, except they still aren't sure whether type one or type 2, as i have savage hypos with insulin and dangerously high sugars without.

I'm on metformin at the moment, but the docs are talking levemir and gliclozide as a real possibility.

I'm here as it seem's to have been a lot of flapping around in the dark trying to get a straight up answer in normal person speak about things.

cheers🙂

Hi Paul, welcome to the forum 🙂 Have they done the C-peptide and GAD antibody tests do you know? It's possible that you are a slow-onset Type 1, also known as Type 1.5 or LADA (Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adulthood). If this is the case it's likely that your pancreas is still producing its own insulin, which is why injected insulin can make you hypo. Unfortunately, diabetes can be far from straightforward to diagnose and doesn't always fall into the Type 1/2 categories that most people are familiar with. We have quite a few people here that have experienced similar problems to you, so hopefully they will be able to share their experiences with you.

How were you diagnosed? Did you have many symptoms beforehand?

Please ask any questions you may have and we will do our best to help. I hope that they are able to get you on good and stable medication soon.

Welcome to the forum Paul 🙂

Hi Paul. Welcome 🙂

It must be very frustrating to not know which type you are.

And a welcome to the forum from me too.

I hope you get some answers and a stablised medication routine soon.

Andy 🙂

aw thanks for the warm welcome.

basically i had the classic "why can't i stop peeing? why do i feel so tired and groggy?" symptoms.

went to my gp, bloods were at 38 and keytones at 17, taken in to hospital, sorted out and now no one is quite sure whats going on i think, i've never defiled so many plastic cups.

MY levels were 38 at diagnosis too. Not sure what the 17 for ketones represents though - I had full-blown DKA (diabetic ketoacidosis) and had been throwing up for 4 days prior, losing 17 pounds in weight over that period. Did you feel sick at all, and had you lost any weight? Were you given insulin in hospital?

It does sound more T1 than T2 but they need to do the proper tests to know for sure.

Welcome to you. There are lots of people who will be able to help on here🙂
Sorry to hear you are having a rough time at the moment. I'm sure when they have sorted your medication out and decided what to do your levels will come down and you will stop running to the toilet and you will have more energy again.
I get ketones when I am poorly and become resistant to insulin.
Sounds like you need insulin but I'm not a doctor.
Let us know how you are getting on.

no vomiting, but could not stop drinking or eating, i lost 2 stone in a month or so (went from about 18.5 stone down to 16 stone, yes i'm a big lad, 6'4" and big in the shoulders too...fat also but hey) my docs told me i had a urinal infection and flu at first, it took a student doctor at the practice to go "hang on let me just check...OH MY GOD"

this was all a few days before christmas, which was super, THEN they signed me off, and due to the hypos i only got back to work at the end of february.

i will look back on it one day and laugh...i'm pretty sure...

2.5 stones in a month is a fair old weight loss! It's quite possible that you did have an infection or virus, and this is what brought things to a crisis point, as you become more insulin resistant when fighting something - your blood sugar would have risen and your cells, being starved of energy, would have started to use stored body fat and producing ketones. If the 17 represents mg/dl then it's not too bad and equivalent to around 1 mmol/l.

Knowing what I know now, it amazes me that they often don't check for diabetes when presented with several obvious symptoms! I hope you start to get some stability and some answers soon.

Thats good the vomiting has stopped. I vomit when the ketones are very high. I bet you are very weak to.
Hope they sort you out soon.
I had gestational diabetes which came back six weeks after birth.
I lost all the weight I put on and another stone until they did the glucose test which came back at 28.1.
