Hello,

I have managed to order the Codefree BG testing gadget as recommended by Northerner via Amazon, I then had a cold so didnt get going with it till after the cold as I read infections put your BG up. After a tussle getting the battery in ( I had to google for how to open the compartment!) I got it up and running, and I was 5.4 before lunch and 7.7 2 hours after. I'm T2 , diet only, and I'm following this Forum's advice to test, rather than the GP who said don't bother as I'm borderline(!) Will be taking the advice of Gretchen in the recommended book and testing 2 different times on different days to build up a picture and input into the DUK App. Am still losing weight on Slimming World system, steady at 1lb or half lb a week, done 11lbs off so far. Aiming for 1 and half stone off (21lbs)

My question today is - how do people safely dispose of their used sharps from the lancet? I can see people are using the same needle a few times, fine- but what after that when the time comes to throw them?

I've got a sharps box, which is disposed of by the chemist. Had to ask at the GPs, which rather surprises me!
Before that I used an old plastic bottle or box and put in the landfill bin, but I don't think this is advisable or possibly legal!

Congratulations on the weight loss

Natasha

Congrats on loosing the weight.

I get my sharps bin via my GP's practice, others get them via a prescription. Disposal of full sharps bins can be via the GP practice (where mine get exchanged) or via the council waste collection service. It seams to vary area to area, worth asking at your GP first to see if they will provide one.

Sounds like you are doing really well PeppermintT, well done! 🙂 You're getting some good results and that's a brilliant weight loss. I suppose sharps disposal might be a slight problem if you are going against your doctor's orders about testing, but they can't stop you from doing it! Where I live the council deals with sharps disposal, but I do need a referral from the GP, so you may have to bite the bullet and ask what the arrangements are in your area. Personally, I use the Accuchek Multiclix lancet where the sharps are fully enclosed so I can dispose of them in normal waste. I'm also still on my first box of lancets since diagnosis over 5 years ago! 😱

I'm a little bit better than Northe at changing my lancets, I'm on my second box after four years. :D

I have a sharps box box now but before my diagnosis was changed I wasn't 'allowed' to test. That didn't stop me of course and I used to use an old Highland Spring water bottle to store the used lancets. I still do this when travelling as I'm using at least four needles per day for insulin and other stuff and they do pile up otherwise.

A nurse back then told me it as 'OK' to dispose of the lancets in the normal rubbish collection but I've never quite liked to do that. I'd rather see them safely contained if they can't be disposed of by the 'experts'.

You have to change the lancet?

I think im on the same one since 1992!

😛

Yes! and it's amazing how the depth gauge can suddenly revert down to a lower figure, immediately you do that, Benny !

I know it's a PITA changing em but I'm here to tell you after all those years being totally negligent about it, when I got my first Multiclix 2 years ago, the lowest setting I can go to is 2, and they go down in HALVES.

Alan Shanley swears his has been set at no higher than 1.5 ever since he was first diagnosed.

I've always been a desk jockey too, so it's not like I can blame bricklaying etc for thickening my skin.

BE TOLD !

I consider myself told!

Hey I need the hard skin for blasting out mega riffs on the old banjo!

Ive always been a little naughty for changing needles and lancets (Although im slightyly better at changing my needle now). Its like my guilty plesure that I dont tell any one about..!
