Eight weeks ago yesterday evening, by telephone, I received the news that I was type 2 diabetes from a routine blood screen. Shocked and a little bit scared not least by the way it was conveyed to me. My Hba1c was 50 and I asked the nurse could I try reducing numbers by diet rather than medication her response was you are not taking this seriously, you could need amputations and may lose your sight if you don't, I'll review in 6 months.
Anyway I spent most of the night researching, and found this site. A big THANK YOU to everyone for sharing your experiences you inspired me and still do, to try to reduce my weight and hopefully my Hba1c. You gave me the information I needed to go back to gp surgery and arrange an appointment with the Diabetic Specialist nurse there. She arranged an eye test for me - clear, foot clinic appointment - clear and gave me a blood glucose monitor, (though I have to provide my own test strips and lancets) and enrolled me on diabetes online education course. I bought on forum members recommendation Carbs & Cals and reduced my carb intake.
I know I have a long way to go, but this morning the scales show I'm 66.2kg (down from 74.9kg) and my BMI shows a healthy weight (albeit at the top of the scale).
