I was classed as T2 during the summer and looking back one of the symptoms that should have told me this was more frequent trips to the toilet during the night. With blood glucose levels under good control I expected this stop but I am still getting up every 3 - 4 hours to empty myself, and that's with not drinking anything after 6pm and going just before I climb into bed. Only once has it been longer, at 5 hours between pit stops. Before T2 developed I could go all night without going.

Can anyone suggest a diagnosis and/or remedies?

Hi Chris, I still usually have to get up during the night to empty my bladder, only once as a rule, but within the timescales you describe ( in bed for about 6-7 hours a night, get up once). Do you produce much when you go? If not I suppose there's a possibility of a UTI or bladder infection (urinary tract infection). I don't know whether the pre-diagnosis stress of having to go lots has a longer-term effect on your bladder's capacity to hold on. What are your BG levels like before bed/on waking? Even if they are only a bit above non-diabetic 'normal' then this may have an effect. Your doctor is probably the best person to ask.

Northerner's ideas make perfect sense.

Your bladder can be retrained if it's only habit. If you lay there and think of something else for a while, if the urgency goes away and you can get back to sleep, you may find that after a couple of nights, you can sleep through.

If it's a UTI, you can pee in a glass and see if it's cloudy. If it is, then def go to GP, but can still be infected if clear. Especially if it stings when you go.

If you test your BG when you get up to the toilet youll know if it's that. If I'm above about 7 or 8 it'll have an effect on my bladder these days.
