Admitted to hospital a month ago with respiratory infection which, combined with COPD, needed 40mg prednisolone/oxygen/nebuliser/antibiotics to get some air into me. Needless to say BG went sky high.
Since I only maintain mobility when on steroids and get sick of life when I can barely get off the loo let alone walk/garden/play with the dog I have persuaded my GP to let me stay on 15mg - provided I get my BG backdown. I am working hard to get it down again as I had achieved 2 normal HbA1Cs before the infection struck.
Current fasting glucose, average over 7 days, 5.6mmol/l. Currently breathing well and pretty mobile - I mowed the lawn yesterday as the boy couldn't come!
I thought it might help others on steroids to know that very low carbs (20g), high protein (1.6-2g per kilo body weight) and make up the rest of the calories with healthy fats (eating 1550 cals, maintenance for weight would be 1870) is getting my BG back to normal and also letting me continue to lose a bit more weight (only 5 kilos to go and I'll be back to my weight at 21 years of age.) It may not work for others but it does for me so maybe worth a try?
