Steroid Induced Diabetes
Hi, I had blood tests carried out last week and received a call from my GP on Thursday advising I have type 2 diabetes and they were prescribing oral medication for me, which I have to take for a month then see diabetes nurse. I was not given any advice on what to do to help control it, what I should be eating and what to do if I did get a hypo.

I was in total shock and disbelief and have been worried ever since. Fortunately a work colleague advised me of your web site and this has been a massive help. Thank you.

Fingers crossed the medication helps and I can learn to live with another life long illness.

Steroids are renowned for causing problems with blood glucose, are they something you are taking permanently or just in the short term.
Just to help with some advice, do you know what your HbA1C is that gave you the diagnosis and what medication have you been prescribed.
Many find that by reducing carbohydrates will be successful in reducing blood glucose so this link may help you with a way forward of modifying your diet. https://lowcarbfreshwell.com/ Depending on what medication you have been given this may be suitable.
With some dietary changes Type 2 is a very manageable condition.

Hello @Bushedin38,
By coincidence there was another posting earlier today from someone with steroid induced diabetes. I'm providing a link to my reply to that which might give you some information, with the huge caveat that I am in no way medically qualified.

It would probably make more sense for you to reply and/or keep posting independently on this post, rather than transferring to that post. But I don't think that would be super critical either way. Do you know what your HbA1c is? Did you attribute the Type as Steroid Induced Diabetes or did that phrase come from your GP?

Welcome to the forum @Bushedin38

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis. Feeling overwhelmed and shocked by the news is completely understandable! But try not to feel too disheartened by your diagnosis - diabetes is a potentially serious condition, but it is also something which can usually be well managed with a few tweaks and changes.

Glad you have found the forum and website helpful 🙂
