Hi. I was diagnosed 2 months ago though I think I have had it for 12 months due to courses of steroids which I am no longer on. I was on Gliclazide but am on nothing now. 2 things concern me. The hospital are only interested in pre meal BGs. When I mention BGs after they say I don’t need to do that but I can have a pre meal reading of 6.7 which goes up 2 hours after to 10.4 .They don’t want to put me on metformin as they think it could cause problems with my ulcerative colitis. Also re carbs I need to put on weight so any suggestions how to do this without raising BG would be helpful.

More protein and/or fat for weight gain without BG increase, if you're already eating enough of the right kinds of fruit & veg.

Hi @Hilary M You don't say what your HbA1C was upon T2 diagnosis, but if you are seeing pre-meal Blood Glucose readings below 7.0 , then it sounds like your diet only needs a little tweaking to get your T2 under control or even into remission. Measuring 2hrs after 1st bite and aiming for a rise of 2.0 or less is a way to achieve this.

As trophywench says above, to avoid weight loss (or even to gain weight) try to eat more protein and a little more fat (the natural fat that comes with the protein). Eggs are great as are cheese, fatty fish and fattier cuts of meat - for example eat chicken with the skin, don't cut noticeable fat off meat. Red meat and saturated fat has had an undeserved bad reputation. All the studies which 'show' it to be bad for us have it lumped in with highly processed foods - in other words a junk food diet is bad for you even if you do eat a little decent traditional meat within that! And don't get me started on Bacon - there are more nitrites in Celery than you would ever eat in Bacon !

Welcome to the forum @Hilary M

Sounds like you have a good handle on things, and want to actively manage your blood glucose levels, perhaps more-so than your clinic. They may be thinking that as long as your pre-meal BGs remain in line, then your post-meal rises must be low enough, but I can completely understand you wanting to use post-meal checks to inform adjustments to your menu, and reduce blood glucose variation overall.

The old guidelines for T2 used to be 4-7 before meals and no higher than 8.5 by 2hours after meals if that helps?

Thank you everyone for your helpful suggestions. Being a newbie it all helps me to understand the illness better and gives me some positive lines of action. I like the idea of bacon sometimes!
