Hello, I'm new here & was wondering if anyone has any advice on statins. I've just had my hba1c review & I'm now in the pre diabetic category but I've been offered statins as a precautionary. My cholesterol is currently at 5.1 so Dr is happy with it x

No advice really, not in position to suggest take them or refuse.

All will say, my total cholesterol was 4.1 with all ratios good, despite this statin were suggested & after careful consideration decided to take them with some apprehension about side effect.

3 months in now & no side effects, just on low dose of 20g, likely having type 1 long time was factor in suggesting drug, either way happy to stay on it for that added protection.

Thank you for your reply. I'm type 2 & was diagnosed 2 years ago following 3 bouts of acute pancreatitis. At the time of being discharged from hospital my HBA1C was 149 & my cholesterol was 9.1 it's a low doseage the GP has offered .

@Lynne468 Our GP surgery recommends statins for everyone over 60 so we have them but my next door neighbour is a Chemist into researching drug developments, he has banned his wife from taking them. We’ve been on them for about 8 years with no known side effects. I think if you ask 10 people you’ll get 10 different answers so good luck!

Hi and welcome.

Unfortunately statins are a controversial topic and people have very different experiences and opinions of them. Thankfully my HCPs have not suggested them despite my Cholesterol being higher than the guidance for diabetics which is 4 I believe. (My last reading has come down a little and was 4.9 if I remember correctly). They seem to be happy that my ratios are good and so they have not recommended or offered to prescribe them and I am certainly happy not taking them, despite eating a low carb, high fat diet.

Thank you. I guess you're right. They were offered as a precaution. My daughter is a nurse & said that they won't hurt .

Right thought you were pre diabetic in opening post, having diabetes puts us at greater risk of strokes heart attacks so likely reason why statin was suggested my friend.

Thing is, most drugs list side effects but not everyone experiences them, choice is yours at end of day.

Like you, mine was a sudden diagnosis after suffering 4 hours of acute pancreatitis. Which on CT scan showed gall stones passing. I went on Metformin & glicazide the rest has been down to diet & exercise. My main problem is getting the tablets down. I'm rubbish xx

Thank you. I was diagnosed type 2 but just had my annual review & told I'm now in the pre diabetic category. My mum is also type 2 but has insulin. She also has stents in her heart & has had 2 strokes. I guess anything to prevent me going down the same path is a good thing x

Statins are generally recommended for most people with diabetes, certainly as you get older.

There is plenty of scientific research that demonstrates positive impact with very low incidence of ‘adverse events’. However there are many anecdotal accounts of people who have found they didn’t get on with statins, and some people don’t like how the clinical trials were conducted and how the data was handled (and not openly released for analysis).

I took Atorvastatin for a few weeks and thought I was losing my mind. I was right. I have had to relearn quite a few things, I have stopped playing my guitar, after over 40 years, and keep finding things I can no longer remember.

Hi Mike - I am one of those 'anecdotal accounts ... even after my then GP (before moving away) had reduced them to half. Current DSN would like me to take them, but I am not happy with the potential outcomes ...

OK for some, but I feel there are too many who have had side effects ...

My Diabetes Nurse who retired about 5 years ago said she was getting more people reporting problems with them.

I'm another anecdote - of course you get more people reporting side effects of any treatment when more and more people are prescribed any drug. It's a bit like (but again nothing like) finding more people testing positive for Covid19, once you start testing more and more people.

Hello @Lynne468 statins not for me, tried them twice I think I was at deaths door.
I know plenty of people who take them with no problems but for me a no go.

All you can do is try them and see, hopefully you will be ok.
