As I mentioned in a previous thread J starts his pump at the end of this month. I have taken 2 weeks parental leave from work- will this be enough time to get into the swing of it and also to get his teachers involved so they know what they are doing when he's at school? J's DSN will be visiting school too for this bit.
2 weeks felt like a long time when I was sorting out the leave but the nearer we get the more I am starting to panic that perhaps I should have arranged longer!
C

2 weeks is about the time it took me to sort out the nightime and daytime basals - testing every 2 hours through the night - its very tiring.😱

Dont worry - you have us on here to help you too.🙂Bev

It is difficult to say to be honest...

To whether a newbie gets a good start or struggles are based around several factors..

1, how good are they with new technology
2, carb coutning skills
3, this probably is the one that makes a lot of difference to starting experienc, do they understand why MDI is failing them, so understand what they want the pump to achieve..

You tend to find those that are able to say, MDI fails because of these reasons blah blah... Have a better and quicker start experience, than those who have to use the pump to unravel where the problems with control lay...

Is there any chance that you can arrange an extention if needs be? Prewarn your employers that this might be necessary or perhaps some flexibility around the return to work, so that you are available at time when perhaps teachers and your son need some extra input!!

You should be able to guage after the first week wheather an extention or extra flexibility around your return to work is required, as you be better able to decided what problems you are having, and also the teachers problems with understanding a new piece of kit etc..

When I started pumping as a kid, I had a night in hospital, sent home and then a clinic vista a fortnight later. After that it was back to normal 3-6 months. Everything went quite smoothly. No real problems to speak of.

Granted, pumps are a lot more complicated these days but I reckon a fortnights leave should do the trick if you get all the training and support. Theres a lot more support these days be sure to use it Just don't be afraid of asking ANY questions... Especially the "daft" ones as they often are the most important and relevant.

Hope all foes tickety-boo (and enjoy your break. Heheh).

Hi , this is a tricky one i would say 2 weeks is about right , You have to remember that when J is at home and when J is at school is 2 different things . Although i got it perfect at home i found when i went back to work because i was doing more excersice etc i had to tweak the doses slightly 🙂

Good point Jenny... I'm not a parent so feel free to shoot me down in flames if I get this bum about face, but how about a week off school and a week (a few days at least) in. That way you're at least off work and available if the phone rings to go and pick her up. AND you get to watch Loose Women in peace. Heheh!

Thanks guys for you thoughts. I'm hoping J can go back to school during the first week-depending on how tired he is and if I can keep my eyes open long enough to drive him there! I'll be lurking around at school I suspect, pretty much like I did when he was first diagnosed.
C 🙂
