Type 2
Hi,

I was originally diagnosed with type 2 after a hospital admission and prescribed insuman basal and apidra to help. After a few months I got down to injecting hardly anything as my blood sugars were good and hba1c dropped back to near normal.

Roll on 3 months and I’m finding my blood sugar is around 19 again and I’m finding it hard to drop it, this is no doubt due to old habits returning ... currently being corrected.

My question is, I’m still prescribed the above and have in-date pens still in the fridge. Can I start injecting again without having consultation with my doctor?

Thanks in advance.

Difficult to advise as a type 1, because I wouldn’t be able to stop my insulin completely. But I have certainly been given the skills to adjust and change my doses up and down on an ongoing basis without necessarily checking with an HCP for ‘approval’ (good job too as they’d never get anything else done!).

You could consider calling NHS 111 for advice, otherwise I suppose it depends on how confident you are that you could restart insulin therapy safely on your own, or whether you would prefer some qualified input first. Insulin is a potentially lethal drug after all.
