Journey Award on Nov. 13. The award acknowledges those who have lived with diabetes and used insulin for at least 25 years.

?We want to celebrate the journey of people who thrive with diabetes and do their best to live a great life,? said Paul Leonardi, Western U.S. medical director for Lilly and Company.

The awards began in 1975, when the CEO of Lilly and Company, Eli Lilly, came up with the idea to recognize those who had been on insulin for 50 years, almost since its discovery. Eli Lilly personally signed those award certificates.

Today, the awards honor those who have used insulin for 25, 50 or 75 years, with a bronze, silver or gold medal. The CEO of Lilly, currently Dr. John C. Lechleiter, still personally signs each certificate. Recipients at St. Marks had been using insulin for 25 to 64 years.
