I've noticed that only one healthcare professional has recommended the site to a member that has responded to our 'How did you find us' poll. I often wonder if there are many healthcare professionals - doctors, DSNs etc. - 'looking in' on us, either as registered members or guests, and how many of them are actually aware of our existence and how helpful the forum can be to people.

If not many, we need to try and find ways that we can spread the word to these people, so they can pass on the recommendation to both newly diagnosed and longer term diabetics. I might try and knock up a poster and get it put up at my local GP surgery and the Diabetes clinic.🙂

Any other ideas?

I think a poster would be a great idea, if someone was happy to put one together (don't mind helping out) I'd be happy to put it up at my diabetes clinc/GP surgery and I'm sure plenty of others would be.
DUK also do a publication called Update which is for healthcare professionals, may be worth trying to get a piece in there...?
Happy to help out with anything as necessary, press releases, letters etc...

Brilliant thought

Perhaps is there an association for Diabetic Specialist Nurses who culd be asked to inform patieints

Or some type of written flyer that pharmacists could hand out when dispensing tablets or insulin.

I wish you well in trying to achieve your goal

Hazel

Hi Northerner,

Next time Nathan has his hospital clinic appointment, I will write down the web site and give it to his DSN.
I will also get in contact with the Furness Diabetic Suppoert Group for Adults and Children and pass on the site details.
Brilliant idea about the poster, perhaps if poss you could make it download able, then I can circulate it to the doctors surgery as well

Sounds like a good idea. Downloadable poster too. I am in email contact with the hospital DSN and will send a link.

yes I agree with you northerner, I just dont think the word is out there in the professional world.

There are the same displays of posters in my diabetes clinic as when i was first diagnosed......zzzzZZZZZ and I bet Im not alone in that respect. I would happily ask them to display a poster, I could download it and print them off. For gods sake, they put someone playing a harp in our waiting room on one appointment I went to because it was apparently "calming" (her face looked constipated as she played, which of course annoyed the hell out of me), so I cant see they would object to a useful poster.

oh, now that sounds entertaining, all we get is daytime tv in the corner!

I know! It didnt help my diabetes, or my blood pressure! I suggested to our receptionist he direct her downstairs to the A&E waiting room and do some "calming" down there....hell yeah!

Was just cruising DUK website about the bodyworlds thing, but came across this https://www.diabetes.org.uk/OnlineS...-diabetes-and-Diabetes-Uk/Diabetes-Act-Early/ prmotional materials downloadable for diabetes week 2009. There are blank posters (free) with just their logos on. Wondered perhaps they would agree to us downloading and putting the website address on? Afterall, it is 'supported' by them?

I asked admin for some posters to give to my doctors surgery and hospital but I think she's been too busy - i'm more than happy to pass them out.

I'd be happy to put up posters at work and ask my doctors surgery to put them up. When I saw the DSN I told her all about this site and said it was the best place I know for getting information that applies to real people rather than someone in a text book or a medical journal.

This sounded like a great idea...but...ust had a quick look. It would have to be the A4 poster as I doubt many of us have A3 printers. Also, they are pdf's and I doubt many of us have editing capabilities for pdf's, finally they are for Diabetes Week and I would worry that the various places would take them down when the week was over - I think we need something that will go up and have no reason to come down🙂

I am not brilliant at design, but will try and knock up some ideas and post them here for comments/suggestions! I think we need to have:

  • The website name (obviously!)
  • Some info about the site and what to find there
  • Some info that it is available to all - parents, cares, Type 1,1.5,2,gestational, etc.
  • The 'supported by DUK' logo
  • A picture of Kate Bush (OK, might be optional!:D)

Any other ideas? Do feel free to design your own and post it! We have some great ideas and enthusiasm here. I just think of how great this place has been for everyone who has joined, but it's still only 1150 out of a possible 2.5 million in the country and thos people could feel so much better about their diabetes if they came and shared their experiences, asked their questions and found friendship and support here!🙂

I think a big bar of chocolate in the design is pushing it a bit far, but maybe soem diabetic celebrities as a boarder? Not halle Berry thoe...

haha! Northener, I agree with what you say, well thought out!

Would tatooing it on my DSNs forehead be considered inappropriate? 😉. I think that would get us noticed!

It would get her noticed! Perhaps we can persuade the 'disgusted nurse' to act as the 'face' of our campaign and tattoo her?:D Actually, I do think that the debate sparked by her horror at seeing people inject in public was a great illustration of how the forum can help people - some people might have felt very self-conscious about injecting after reading that, but came on here and found an overwhelming condemnation of her and support for themselves. There were responses in Balance, but that was two months later.

I will hand a few out. I was thinking along the same lines as this thread. I was thinking of a separate area, where professionals could post, and answer questions posed to them.

Oh well................

Poster/leaflet

I am working on it right now - I do not want anything using low res images used. I will post as soon as it is done. I am sorry for the delay - but am working 12 hour days and trying to fit everything in...
Thank-you for your pateince and the kick up the butt to address this.

Hello everyone 🙂
I think this is a great idea, i myself have been distributing our local Diabetic newsletter (sweetpea). Can i just bring to mind that the GP surgeies are not the only places to put up posters, the opticians are more than too pleased to advertise as Diabetes effect our eyesite too & almost all the high street shops are willing to put posters on their notice boards. & maybe one on in their window for all to see. I too think that this website is not advertised enough and will put a link into some of my groups on the internet too.
I got here through DUK. This is a fantastic group & have been made very welcome by you good people & i can't thank you enough, this group is my sanctuary & have got some good feedback in the short time i have been here & been diagnosed. I too am willing to help in any way i can. 🙂

I shall put this web address forward to my local support group Committee members in June when we hold our monthly meetings. Maybe they will place it in the newsletter next time round

Hi Northerner, I am proud to say that it was MY nurse who was the healthcare professional who recommended me to the website when I was diagnosed back at the end of the year. I'll pass on your comments when I have my next appointment with her and would be pleased to take a poster into our surgery. The team at my surgery are a great lot in general but I was so lucky when diagnosed to have been allocated to Isobel who has been so kind and understanding, and even my Consultant said that it was good to find a nurse who was so caring and good at her job - and he wasn't being patronising. I notice from some of the other posts over the past few months that many of our friends here have not been so lucky in their own teams.
