As a new member over the last few weeks I have been reading past threads. I have been having very high blood sugars around tea time and hence having to take quite a lot of novorapid (14 units to cover what i would regard as a fairly low carb meal). I have then been going hypo approx 3am every morning. I now realise that I think my Levemir (26 units) which I take in the evenings was running out hence needing a lot of novorapid to cover this period.

Subsequently I decided to split the dose of Levemir and take 1/2 am and 1/2 pm. I have however found that Splitting the dose does not appear enough. Instead of taking 2 X 13 units I'am now taking 2 x (16 units) Total 32 units now instead of 26 units as before.

Not due to go to hosp for another 3 months so wandered if anyone has advise who has split their Levemir, and has it improved your HBA1c results.

Sorry if this appears waffle.

Hi Kezza,
You might find the a 50/50 split doesn't work for you. So will have to play around with the dose for a few weeks to find what suits you best.
When you make a change leave it for at least 3 days before you make another change this way your body will have a chance to adapt to things better.

Just another though, can you not ring your diabetes team for advice too? There is normally a phone service to the DSN's in most clinics

Have you found that the split has helped your blood sugars be more even? as in you are not having the 3am hypos and pre-dinner/bed highs?

The other thing to just be aware of is, if your levemir doesn't last 24hours (which is what it appears) then by splitting you get rid of the big gap in insulin coverage but the result is 2 smaller time of decreased coverage. Sometimes this isn't enough to notice, for some people it is.

I think it would be a good idea to contact your DSN, they may not be too thrilled when you go to clinic to hear you've been doing this on your own.

Yes I know usually do contact consutant but I'am a born worrier and once blood sugars became really high 14 and 15 started to worry about damage it was doing.

Consultant really good. Looks after me really well, and up on all latest advances. However he knows that after 16 years of having to live with this only I know what my body needs for the best. In the past he has always considered my opinion anyway before making any changes (even through my 3 pregnancies).

I have found that blood sugars are now settling and I actually need less novorapid to cope with meals.

Hi Kezza,

It took a while to work out the right doses for my morning and evening levemir. My evening dose is now 30 units and my morning levemir is 17 units. I've only just got the split doses right in the last couple of months, having been doing this since about this time last year.

Overall do you think it was the right dec to split the doses, even though it has taken a while. Are you now on more levemir in total since doing the split.

Kerry (Kezza)

Kezza,

I think that it was a good decision to split the levemir. Things are now just that little bit better for me than they used to be. I used to be on about 50 units of levemir in one dose in the evening, less now and split over two doses.
